The Method that Alan was taught had to have so much concentration and imagination about what was on the script, and that nothing else matters but being able to be that character and living the role, not just acting it, putting himself into a mode to where he would visualize and feel so much more than any other actor could by staying in the role throughout the whole shoot, living the character as if he transformed into them--mentally and physically--not knowing what the consequences could be.
