The Economics of Catalan Separatism

The Economics of Catalan Separatism

This book analyses the economic consequences of the regional government of Catalonia's challenge to democracy and the rule of law in Spain. This process, started in 2010, culminated in a coup d'état in the autumn of 2017. The book has three parts. First: The circumstances behind the challenge: economic structure, social and political aspects. Second: The economic impacts of the resulting huge political instability and social polarisation, and the downturn in GDP, investment, competitiveness, Barcelona's appeal, and flight of companies and banks to Madrid. Third: Independence would mean collapse of trade with the rest of Spain and the EU, expulsion from the eurozone, fall of GDP, plummeting tax revenue, soaring unemployment and, finally, conversion of this hypothetical new Catalonia into a failed, vassal and totalitarian state. This book is destined to be the foremost work of reference on the consequences of the separatist threat to Spain, including Catalonia's current decline.

Behavioral Game Theory

Behavioral Game Theory

Game theory, the formalized study of strategy, began in the 1940s by asking how emotionless geniuses should play games, but ignored until recently how average people with emotions and limited foresight actually play games. This book marks the first substantial and authoritative effort to close this gap. Colin Camerer, one of the field's leading figures, uses psychological principles and hundreds of experiments to develop mathematical theories of reciprocity, limited strategizing, and learning, which help predict what real people and companies do in strategic situations. Unifying a wealth of information from ongoing studies in strategic behavior, he takes the experimental science of behaviora...

Latent Variable Modeling and Applications to Causality

This volume gathers refereed papers presented at the 1994 UCLA conference on "La tent Variable Modeling and Application to Causality. " The meeting was organized by the UCLA Interdivisional Program in Statistics with the purpose of bringing together a group of people who have done recent advanced work in this field. The papers in this volume are representative of a wide variety of disciplines in which the use of latent variable models is rapidly growing. The volume is divided into two broad sections. The first section covers Path Models and Causal Reasoning and the papers are innovations from contributors in disciplines not traditionally associated with behavioural sciences, (e. g. computer ...

Identity and Nation in 21st Century Catalonia

This volume offers an overview of the ongoing debate regarding nationalism, globalisation, secessionism and languages in 21st century Catalonia. At the heart of the book is a set of interlocking questions relating to socio-political issues in sub-state nations seeking independence in the 21st century.

What is the role of fit measures when respecifying a model? Should the means of the sampling distributions of a fit index be unrelated to the size of the sample? Is it better to estimate the statistical power of the chi-square test than to turn to fit indices? Exploring these and related questions, well-known scholars examine the methods of testing structural equation models (SEMS) with and without measurement error, as estimated by such programs as EQS, LISREL and CALIS.

New Developments in Psychometrics

At the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society in Osaka, Japan, more than 300 participants from 19 countries gathered to discuss recent developments in the theory and application of psychometrics. This volume of proceedings includes papers on methods of psychometrics such as the structural equation model and item response theory. The book is in eight major sections: keynote speeches and invited lectures; structural equation modeling and factor analysis; IRT and adaptive testing; multivariate statistical methods; scaling; classification methods; and independent and principal component analysis. The 80 papers collected here provide a valuable source of information for all who are concerned with psychometrics, mathematical and statistical applications, and data analysis in psychological and behavioral sciences.

The contributions in this volume, made by distinguished statisticians in several frontier areas of research in multivariate analysis, cover a broad field and indicate future directions of research. The topics covered include discriminant analysis, multidimensional scaling, categorical data analysis, correspondence analysis and biplots, association analysis, latent variable models, bootstrap distributions, differential geometry applications and others. Most of the papers propose generalizations or new applications of multivariate analysis. This volume will be of great interest to statisticians, probabilists, data analysts and scientists working in the disciplines such as biology, biometry, ecology, medicine, econometry, psychometry and marketing. It will be a valuable guide to professors, researchers and graduate students seeking new and promising lines of statistical research.
