Experimental Research in Earthquake Engineering
In this volume, top seismic experts and researchers from Europe and around the world, including the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) in the USA, present the most recent outcome of their work in experimental testing, as well as the results of the transnational access activities of external researchers who have used Europe's seven largest and most advanced seismic testing facilities in the framework of the Seismic Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies (SERIES) Project financed by the European Commission in its 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013). This includes EU’s largest reaction wall facility, EU's four largest shaking table laboratories and its two major centrifuges. The work presented includes state-of-the-art research towards the seismic design, assessment and retrofitting of structures, as well as the development of innovative research toward new fundamental technologies and techniques promoting efficient and joint use of the research infrastructures. The contents of this volume demonstrate the fruits of the effort of the European Commission in supporting research in earthquake engineering.
Subversive Semantics in Political and Cultural Discourse
The large-scale use of semantic transfer and inversion as rhetorical tactics is particularly prevalent in right-wing discourses and populist »alternative knowledge« production. The contributors to this volume analyze processes of re-semanticizing received meanings, effectually re-coding those meanings. They investigate to what extent rhetorical maneuvers serve to establish new and powerful belief systems beyond rational and democratic control. In addition to the contemporary rightwing and conspiracy narratives, the contributions examine the discursive fields around conceptions of human nature and the deep past, population politics, gender conceptions, use of land, identity politics, nationhood, and cultural heritage.
Earthquakes and Their Impact on Society
This book provides an integrated approach to the assessment of seismic hazards. The reduction of losses expected by future earthquakes is probably the most important contribution of seismology to society. Large earthquakes occurred in densely populated areas highlight the dramatic inadequacy of a massive portion of the buildings demonstrating the high risks of modern industrial societies. Building earthquake-resistant structures and retrofitting old buildings on a national scale can be extremely expensive and can represent an economic challenge even for developed western countries. Earthquakes can cause also several psychological problems due to the fact that such kind of disasters will result in casualties, collapsing of houses, strategic buildings and facilities and deeply affect a community. Moreover in our society it is necessary to properly plan emergency responses and rescues taking into account any possible secondary effect in order to avoid more casualties.

Il dibattito sul clima ha assunto una nuova dimensione legata, soprattutto, a quanto è avvenuto negli ultimi 40 anni, ovvero da quando il tema clima è stato “ribattezzato” Global Warming, passando da prevalente argomento di interesse scientifico a dibattito politico-finanziario. La costituzione dell’Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) nel 1988, sotto l’egida dell’ONU, come organo indirizzato a fornire una chiara visione scientifica del potenziale impatto sociale ed economico del Cambiamento climatico antropico, ha sottratto definitivamente alla scienza il confronto e il dibattito, spostandolo verso i media e il sistema di comunicazione, assumendo quindi una esclusiva dimensione politico-finanziaria. Questo volume nasce con il preciso obiettivo di riaprire un dibattito attraverso un confronto aperto, libero e plurale. L’idea di fornire informazioni razionali, corredate di dati e riferimenti scientifici, è stata accolta da molti scienziati ed esperti i quali affrontano, in questo volume, la complessa tematica ambientale da molteplici punti di vista, con il necessario rigore scientifico.
