The papers collected here comprise the proceedings of a Workshop in honor ofMerrilee and Wes Salmon, held in Florence on May 17-18, 1996. The aim of the meeting was to pay homage to these two American scholars, whose contact with Italian and European Universities and Institutes had a major influence on "Continental" thought in the field of epistemology and probability. In fact, Merrilee and Wes spent various periods lecturing at the Universities of Bologna, Florence, Rome, Trieste, Catania and Pisa, as well as in the University of Constance, where they helped to build a strong cultural "bridge" with the Pittsburgh Center for the Philosophy of Science. Through the years, articles and monographs have presented the results of the Italian archaeological excavations, providing architectural and artefactual evidence for habitation at Iasos that extends at least from the third millennium BCE through the Byzantine Period. Although some fragments of Athenian red-figure pottery have been illustrated and discussed, particularly in recent years,a fuller treatment of all this material has long been desired. Through the inspiration of F. Berti, former Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission, F. Curti and A. Parrini have undertaken the study of all the red-figure from Iasos, and this present volume is the successful result of their persistent efforts.
Logical empiricism, a program for the study of science that attempted to provide logical analyses of the nature of scientific concepts, the relation between evidence and theory, and the nature of scientific explanation, formed among the famed Vienna and Berlin Circles of the 1920s and '30s and dominated the philosophy of science throughout much of the twentieth century. In recent decades, a "post-positivist" philosophy, deriding empiricism and its claims in light of more recent historical and sociological discoveries, has been the ascendant mode of philosophy and other disciplines in the arts and sciences. This book features original research that challenges such broad oppositions. In eleven ...
Many small Renaissance portraits were richly adorned with covers or backs bearing allegorical figures, mythological scenes, or emblems that celebrated the sitter and invited the viewer to decipher their meaning. Hidden Faces includes seventy objects, ranging in format from covered paintings to miniature boxes, that illuminate the symbiotic relationship between the portrait and its pair. Texts by thirteen distinguished scholars vividly illustrate that the other “faces” of these portraits represent some of the most innovative images of the Renaissance, created by masters such as Hans Memling and Titian. Uniting works that have in some cases been separated for centuries, this fascinating volume shows how the multifaceted format unveiled the sitter’s identity, both by physically revealing the portrait and reading the significance behind its cover.
"This book documents the influence of other contemporary civilizations on the Etruscans, and especially the role of the Romans, who absorbed many aspects of Etruscan culture but were ultimately responsible for its end. This is a book about the people of Etruria, their society, craft, art and beliefs."--Jacket.
