Modelling and Simulation for Autonomous Systems
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First International Workshop on Modelling and Simulation for Autonomous Systems, MESAS 2014, held in Rome, Italy, in May 2014. The 32 revised full papers included in the volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 50 submissions, of which 46 were presented at the workshop. They are organized in the following topical sections: unmanned aerial vehicle, distributed simulation, robot system, military application, validation, human-machine communication, gazebo simulator, and algorithm.
Pediatric Surgical Diseases
Radiologic evaluation of an infant or child suspected of having a surgical disease can be a complex problem. With this volume, the editors have created a book focused on pediatric imaging written by pediatricians, pediatric surgeons and pediatric radiologists. This book is a collection of over 200 case reports. The concept is a case study approach: The reader is given radiologic images (plain radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, etc.) and the clinical history of the patient. On the basis of this information, the reader is asked to identify a diagnostic and therapeutic strategy. Each case is complemented by information on the disease affecting the patient and the management of the case shown, including therapy and follow-up. This educational text is targeted at all medical professionals faced with a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic problems affecting infants and children.
Photonic Crystals
As a reason of information explosion, electronic communication networks are not sufficient for high bit rate data transmission. This problem has been solved by optical networks which caused the birth of a new area of technology, photonics. In photonic circuits photons play the dominant role and they transfer the optical data. With the growth of the photonics technology, a new area started to grow as photonic crystals which now play an important role in designing and manufacturing compact photonic devices. Photonic crystals are structures with alternative dielectric constant in one, two or three dimensions which are called one, two or three dimensional photonic crystals. By using the properties of photonic band gap, many interesting phenomena such as slow light generation, dispersion engineering in a compact and low size device can be achieved.

This book describes how to predict and forecast the state of planet Earth’s ionosphere under quiet and disturbed conditions in terms of dynamical processes in the weakly ionized plasma media of the upper atmosphere and their relation to available modern measurements and modelling techniques.
