Idol Food in Corinth

This historical and exegetical investigation strongly challenges the widely held view that Paul regarded idol food as a matter of indifference, to be avoided only for the sake of the spiritual health of the weak. An exhaustive treatment of early Christian material shows that early authors were deeply influenced by Paul's discussion in 1 Corinthians 8-10, and yet they were totally unaware of the subsequent traditional understanding that Paul regarded idol food as indifferent. Even those who advocated eating idol food did not once appeal to Paul's discussion for support. An alternative understanding is proposed: Paul considers conscious consumption of idol food a denial of one's allegiance to Christ. One must avoid idol food if, and only if, it is identified as such.

Kwan Kong Kwe Ngo Koan

Kwan Kong Kwe Ngo Koan (Kwan Kong Menerobos Lima Kota) adalah sebuah episode terkenal dari Sam Kok Yan Gi (Sanguo Yanyi 三國演義) karya Luo Guanzhong yang terbit pada abad ke-14. Dalam roman Kisah Tiga Kerajaan dikisahkan Kwan Kong (Guan Yu) memutuskan meninggalkan Co Coh (Cao Cao 曹操) setelah mendengar keberadaan saudara angkatnya yaitu Lauw Pi (Liu Bei). Namun perjalanan Kwan Kong bersama kedua kakak iparnya yaitu Kam Hujin (Lady Gan) dan Bi Hujin (Lady Mi) untuk menembus lima kota (benteng) tidaklah mudah. Selain mengawal kedua istri Lauw Pi, Kwan Kong harus menghadapi para jenderal bawahan Co Coh yang menghadangnya di lima kota (benteng). Episode ini kemudian menjadi sangat terkenal sampai-sampai muncul ungkapan “Melewati Lima Gerbang dan Menaklukkan Enam Jenderal” - Kwe Ngo Koan, Cham Liok Ciang (Guo Wu Guan, Zhan Liu Jiang 過五關斬六將) yang menggambarkan bagaimana seseorang harus berjuang dengan berani untuk mengatasi kesulitan demi menggapai kesuksesan.

Least of the Apostles

Least of the Apostles is a study of Paul's relation, both in his ministry and through his epistles, to the rest of apostolic Christianity. Studies relating Paul to Judaism, the Roman empire, or Greco-Roman philosophy abound; we adopt the comparatively neglected approach of relating Paul specifically to his fellow apostles. The first three chapters explore the influence on Paul of sources from the earliest church (James and his circle, the "apostolic decree," and proto-Synoptic traditions), while the final three explore Paul's influence on Hebrews, Luke and John, and the Petrine Epistles. We conclude by considering the implications of these findings for New Testament theology.

Hearing the Old Testament in the New Testament

How does the New Testament echo the Old? Which versions of the Hebrew Scriptures were authoritative for New Testament writers? The appearance of concepts, images, and passages from the Old Testament in the books of the New raises important questions about textual versions, allusions, and the differences between ancient and modern meaning. Written by ten distinguished scholars, Hearing the Old Testament in the New Testament first lays out significant foundational issues and then systematically investigates the use of the Old in the New Testament. In a culminating essay Andreas Kstenberger both questions and affirms the other contributors' findings. These essays together will reward a wide range of New Testament readers with a wealth of insights.
