Dendrochronologists have long estimated the impact of climate on tree-ring growth by empirical-statistical methods. The use of the model is illustrated with examples from widely differing environments, and possible future directions for model development and application are discussed. As forests are the main carbon sink on land, the results are of great importance for all global change studies.
Since their spectacular rise in the 1990s, Russian gangs have remained entrenched in many parts of the country. Some gang members have perished in gang wars or ended up behind prison bars, while others have made spectacular careers off the streets and joined the Russian elite. But the rank and file of gangs remain substantially incorporated into their communities and society as a whole, with bonds and identities that bridge the worlds of illegal enterprise and legal respectability. In Gangs of Russia, Svetlana Stephenson explores the secretive world of the gangs. Using in-depth interviews with gang members, law enforcers, and residents in the city of Kazan, together with analyses of historic...
This book describes the principles and applications of dendrochronology and dendrochemistry. It illustrates how these approaches are used to determine the history of natural and anthropogenic stresses on forest ecosystems and to evaluate the present status of the health of ecosystems. ****This abstract needs to be reworked**** This book is a combination of dendrochronology and dendrochemistry. Trees record the passage of each year by the formation of annual rings. The elements deposited in the wood serve as historical records of past environmental change due to global climate change, acidic deposition, heavy metal deposition, ground water contamination, and many other anthropogenic stresses. Dendrochemistry is currently being used as an indicator of forest health in the joint U.S. EPA/U.S. Forest Service long-term monitoring program called Forest Health Monitoring.
Gangs, often associated with brutality and senseless destructive violence, have not always been viewed as inherently antagonistic. The first studies of gangs depicted them as alternative sources of order in urban slums where the state’s authority was lacking, and they have subsequently been shown to be important elements in some youth life cycles. Despite their proliferation there is little consensus regarding what constitutes a gang. Used to denote phenomena ranging from organized crime syndicates to groups of youths who gather spontaneously on street corners, even the term “gang” is ambiguous. Global Gangs offers a greater understanding of gangs through essays that investigate gangs ...
This volume comprises select papers presented during TRANSOILCOLD 2019. It covers the challenges and problems faced by engineers, designers, contractors, and infrastructure owners during planning and building of transport infrastructure in Arctic and cold regions. The contents of this book will be of use to researchers and professional engineers alike.
The plant cell wall plays a vital role in almost every aspect of plant physiology. New techniques in spectroscopy, biophysics and molecular biology have revealed the extraordinary complexity of its molecular architecture and just how important this structure is in the control of plant growth and development. The Second Edition of this accessible and integrated textbook has been revised and updated throughout. As well as focusing on the structure and function of plant cell walls the book also looks at the applications of this research. It discusses how plant cell walls can be exploited by the biotechnology industry and some of the main challenges for future research. Key topics include: archi...
Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) offer wonderful examples of the radical macroscopic effects inherent in quantum physics: phase changes between different forms of matter driven by quantum rather than thermal fluctuations, typically at very low temperatures. QPTs provide new insight into outstanding problems such as high-temperature superconductivit
