The Multivalence of an Epic: Retelling the Ramayana in South India and Southeast Asia

The Rāmāyaṇa traditions of South India and Southeast Asia are examined at multiple levels in this volume. The research presented here offers in-depth investigations of chosen moments in the development of the epic tradition together with broader trends that help in understanding the epic’s multivalence. The journey and localization of the Rāmāyaṇa is explored in its manifold expressions – from classical to folk, from temples and palaces to theatres and by-lanes in cities and villages, and from ancient to modern times. Regional Rāmāyaṇas from different parts of South India and Southeast Asia are placed in deliberate juxtaposition to enable a historically informed discussion of...

Boundaries of the Text

When the Mahabharata and Ramayana are performed in South and Southeast Asia, audiences may witness a variety of styles. A single performer may deliver a two-hour recitation, women may meet in informal singing groups, shaddow puppets may host an all-night play, or professional theaters may put on productions lasting thirty nights. Performances often celebrate ritual passages: births, deaths, marriages, and religious observances. The stories live and are transmitted through performance; their characters are well known and well loved. Yet written versions of the Mahabharata and Ramayana have existed in both South and Southeast Asia for hundreds of years. Rarely have these texts been intended fo...

Catalogue of the Papers of Ernst Leumann in the Institute for the Culture and History of India and Tibet, University of Hamburg

Ernst Leumann (1859-1931), professor in Strasbourg, was one of the most distinguished scholars of his time in Indology, especially renowned for his work in Jaina studies. The papers left by him fill roughly 550 notebooks. The majority of them contain still unpublished transcriptions of Jaina manuscripts which deal mainly with the Jaina narrative literature. A wealth of analytical material concerning Indian literature in general and various Indian languages is also to be found in Leumann's work. The present catalogue presents for the first time a complete list of the material, and is supplemented with notes as to the contents of the notebooks and with various indices. "A Bibliography of Studies Connected With the Avasyaka-Commentaries" by Klaus Bruhn has been added as an appendix. (Franz Steiner 1998)

During the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, German universities were at the forefront of scholarship in Oriental studies. Drawing upon a comprehensive survey of thousands of German publications on the Middle East from this period, this book presents a detailed history of the development of Orientalism. Offering an alternative to the view of Orientalism as a purely intellectual pursuit or solely as a function of politics, this book traces the development of the discipline as a profession. The author discusses the interrelation between research choices and employment opportunities at German universities, examining the history of the discipline within the framework of the...
