Centenary of Maulana Muhammad Ali’s English Translation of the Quran
This booklet is compiled at the centenary of the publication, in 1917 in England, of the English translation and commentary of the Quran by Maulana Muhammad Ali — the first such work by a Muslim to be printed and published in the West, the first such work by a Muslim to be widely available in the world. It recounts the history of how the Maulana carried out this unprecedented project, its publication and the reviews it received. Its influence on later translations is discussed in detail. Maulana Muhammad Ali’s thorough revision of it to produce the 1951 edition, is then covered. Information is also provided about editions produced after his death.
The Holy Qur-án
The Quran, also romanized Qur'an or Koran, is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God. In addition to its religious significance, it is widely regarded as the finest work in Arabic literature, and has significantly influenced the Arabic language. Muslims regard the Quran as Muhammad's most important miracle; a proof of his prophethood; and the culmination of a series of divine messages starting with those revealed to Adam, including the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel.
Introduction to the Holy Quran
This book covers some essential topics, the knowledge of which is required for a proper study and understanding of the Quran. It is divided into five parts as follows. Part 1 deals with the basic structure of the Quran, its interpretation, its relation to earlier scriptures, its purpose and its influence. Part 2 explains the most fundamental teachings of the Quran. In Part 3 the stories of various prophets in the Quran are summarised and it is shown that these are not borrowed from the Bible. Part 4 clarifies misunderstandings regarding teachings of the Quran on certain issues. Part 5 shows how the Quran came to us after being written and arranged during the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
A Manual of Hadith
Ali produced this hadith translation during WWII, so had to reduce the manuscript by one-third because of paper shortages. The intent of this volume was to provide a compendium of the Sahih Bukhari related to the practical life, rather than to spiritual or historical concerns, of Muslims; the work is intended primarily to guide English-speaking Muslim converts.
A Handbook of Islam
A Handbook of Islam is an abridged edition of the work The Religion of Islam, a renowned research work first published in 1936, with subsequent editions published till the present time. The Religion of Islam is a comprehensive book which divides its extensive treatment of Islam into three parts: (1) the sources of Islam, (2) the principles or doctrines of Islam, and (3) the practices of Islam relating to both the spiritual and the material aspects of human life. In this abridgment, discussions on the more advanced topics in The Religion of Islam have been omitted as being of interest only to scholars and researchers, and certain matters of detail have been condensed. The formatting design has been amended, using indented quotations and notes at ends of chapters, to make the book easier to read for the ordinary reader.
English Translation of the Holy Quran
Language updated and notes abridged by the Editor. The English translation of the Holy Quran with extensive explanatory footnotes, by Maulana Muhammad Ali (d. 1951), was first published in 1917. Due to changes in the usage and teaching of English in the second half of the twentieth century, such a reader today is much less familiar with certain forms and styles of literary expression used in the translation than was the case with previous generations. To bring the language closer to the general readership, it became necessary to replace some expressions by more modern forms. This has been my aim in producing the present updated version of the translation.
