Computational Neuroscience: Trends in Research 2003
This volume includes papers originally presented at the 11th annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting (CNS 02) held in July 2002 at the Congress Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The CNS meetings bring together computational neuroscientists representing many different fields and backgrounds as well as many different experimental preparations and theoretical approaches. The papers published here range from pure experimental neurobiology, to neuro-ethology, mathematics, physics, and engineering. In all cases the research described is focused on understanding how nervous systems compute. The actual subjects of the research include a highly diverse number of preparations, modeling approaches and analysis techniques. Accordingly, this volume reflects the breadth and depth of current research in computational neuroscience taking place throughout the world.
Dynamic Neural Field Theory for Motion Perception
Dynamic Neural Field Theory for Motion Perception provides a new theoretical framework that permits a systematic analysis of the dynamic properties of motion perception. This framework uses dynamic neural fields as a key mathematical concept. The author demonstrates how neural fields can be applied for the analysis of perceptual phenomena and its underlying neural processes. Also, similar principles form a basis for the design of computer vision systems as well as the design of artificially behaving systems. The book discusses in detail the application of this theoretical approach to motion perception and will be of great interest to researchers in vision science, psychophysics, and biological visual systems.
Advanced Concepts for Intelligent Vision Systems
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Advanced Concepts for Intelligent Vision Systems, ACIVS 2005, held in Antwerp, Belgium in September 2005. A learning-based computer vision approach for the inference of articulated motion
Computer vision approaches to human motion analysis have received considerable attention from different research areas over the past couple of years. The strong interest is largely due to their various applications in surveillance, driver assistance systems, human-computer interfaces, marker-less motion capture, biomedical engineering and computer graphics. This thesis investigates the computational integration of different visual representations for the detection of human bodies and the analysis of their movements in both indoor and unconstrained outdoor envi-ronments. New image coding schemes are presented in combination with methods from machine learning and dynamic filtering to address issues of complexity, robustness and generalization.

Based on a wealth of new primary data, this book offers the first account of the internal regime factors that ultimately caused the fall of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali's long dictatorship in Tunisia during the Arab Uprisings. Anne Wolf's account challenges studies that focus on the role of mass mobilization alone, and demonstrates that in the last decade of Ben Ali's presidency, dissent within his ruling party - the Constitutional Democratic Rally - mounted to such an extent that followers began challenging their own powerbroker. The culmination of this was a secret coup d'état staged by regime figures against Ben Ali in January 2011, an event that has not previously been uncovered. Wolf proposes a new theory of power and contention within ruling parties in authoritarian regimes to explain how dictators seek to fortify their rule and foster party-political stability, but also when, why, and how they succumb to internal contention and with what effect.
