Violence against Women under International Human Rights Law

Since the mid-1990s, increasing international attention has been paid to the issue of violence against women. However, there is still no explicit international human rights treaty prohibition on violence against women and the issue remains poorly defined and understood under international human rights law. Drawing on feminist theories of international law and human rights, this critical examination of the United Nations' legal approaches to violence against women analyses the merits of strategies which incorporate women's concerns of violence within existing human rights norms such as equality norms, the right to life, and the prohibition against torture. Although feminist strategies of inclusion have been necessary as well as symbolically powerful for women, the book argues that they also carry their own problems and limitations, prevent a more radical transformation of the human rights system, and ultimately reinforce the unequal position of women under international law.

In Flight from Conflict and Violence

The impact of violence and conflict on refugee status determination and international protection is a key developing field. Given the contemporary dynamics of armed conflict, how to interpret and apply the refugee definitions at global and regional levels is increasingly relevant to governmental policy-makers, decision-makers, legal practitioners, academics and students. This book will provide a comprehensive analysis of the global and regional refugee instruments as they apply to claimants in flight from situations of armed violence and conflict, exploring their interrelationship and how they are interpreted and applied (or should be applied). As part of a broader United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees project to develop guidelines on the interpretation and application of international refugee law instruments to claimants fleeing armed conflict and other situations of violence, it includes contributions from leading scholars and practitioners in this field as well as emerging authors with specific expertise.

This story was inspired by a real incident in the life of the author. She and her husband were truck drivers for eighteen years and pulled trailers with many trucks like the big purple truck all over the United States. One day, they found out they had a mouse in the cab of their truck when it ran down the author?s arm as they drove along. Of course, she was quite startled and when she calmed down she made up this story about the incident, trying to imagine the event from the mouse?s point of view. The story lends itself to educational themes about geography and commerce for use in the classroom or with home school programs. It is the first story in a series of nine charming stories that the author has written about the adventurous little mouse and his family.
