Originally published in 1993. The essays in this book collectively seek to illuminate the role of communication and sex-role socialization throughout the life cycle. Section 1 addresses some important issues and behaviours that have an impact on the beginnings of the socialization process. Section 2 covers socialization later on in relationships, the workplace and the political arena while section 3 looks at manifestations of socialization through communication strategies and skills. Finally section 4 addresses ways to alter socialization through instructional practices in higher education. The approach to studying sex-role socialization varies by perspective and methodology and conclusions are interpreted in diverse ways but the results have been very similar and the research in this volume shows that the socialization of males and females continues to reinforce male dominance despite women’s advancement toward equal status in society. This work is of interest in the fields of sociology, psychology, anthropology and women’s studies as well as communication.

Examining a range of South Asian Anglophone diasporic fiction and poetry, this monograph opens a new dialogue between diaspora studies and gender studies. It shows how discourses of diaspora benefit from re-examining their own critical relation to concepts of the maternal and the motherland. From Testing to Assessment: English as an International Language provides a critical review of conventional and alternative approaches to the assessment of English literacy skills in various parts of the world. It presents empirical studies conducted in three major settings: in countries such as Japan and Brazil where English functions as the language of international commernce; in multilingual countries such as Nigeria and Zimbabwe where English is the national language of education and government; and in such countries as Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States where English is the dominant language. The book opens with a discussion of language assessment in relation to debates about the nature of literacy; it concludes with a discussion of policy implications, which is grounded in literacy theory as well as in practical constraints such as available human and material resources.
