The Sabbath in Puritan New England.By

Alice Morse Earle (April 27, 1851 - February 16, 1911) was an American historian and author from Worcester, Massachusetts. She was christened Mary Alice by her parents Edwin Morse and Abby Mason Clary. On 15 April 1874, she married Henry Earle of New York, changing her name from Mary Alice Morse to Alice Morse Earle. Her writings, beginning in 1890, focussed on small sociological details rather than grand details, and thus are invaluable for modern social historians. She wrote a number of books on colonial America (and especially the New England region) such as Curious Punishments of Bygone Days. She was a passenger aboard the RMS Republic when, while in a dense fog, that ship collided with the SS Florida. During the transfer of passengers, Alice fell into the water. Her near drowning in 1909 off the coast of Nantucket during this abortive trip to Egypt weakened her health sufficiently that she died two years later, in Hempstead, Long Island.

Alice Morse Earle and the Domestic History of Early America

Author, collector, and historian Alice Morse Earle (1851-1911) was among the most important and prolific writers of her day. Between 1890 and 1904, she produced seventeen books as well as numerous articles, pamphlets, and speeches about the life, manners, customs, and material culture of colonial New England. Earle's work coincided with a surge of interest in early American history, genealogy, and antique collecting, and more than a century after the publication of her first book, her contributions still resonate with readers interested in the nation's colonial past. An intensely private woman, Earle lived in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and four children and conducted much of her re...

Colonial Days in Old New York is a treasure trove of facts about the life and times of the American colonists and the birth of our nation. Renowned historian and bestselling author Alice Morse Earle provides a vivid portrait of the daily lives of America's early settlers. From childhood to old age, from courtship and weddings to crime and punishment, from what they ate and drank to sports and entertainment, you'll discover what life was really like in America's colonial era. With a mix of anecdotes and intimate details, Earle brings America's bygone days to life. Earle is an acclaimed historian of America's colonial era. In the past many scholars dismissed her work, often because she was a woman, and her books focused on the details of everyday life. Since then she has earned her place as a one of the primary sources of America's early social history. "We all know that our country is great, far better than we know why it is great. And perhaps that is the best reason why we should love history. It makes us love our country." - Alice Morse Earle
