The XX Factor

The XX Factor

For most of history, being female defined the limits of a woman's achievements. But now, women are successful careerists equal to men. In Norway, women legally must constitute a third of all boards; in America, women have gone from 3% of practising lawyers in 1970 to 40% today, and over half of all law students. These changes are revolutionary - but not universal: the 'sisterhood' of working women is deeply divided. Making enormous strides in the workplace are young, educated, full-time professionals who have put children on hold. But for a second group of women this is unattainable: instead, they work part-time, earn less, are concentrated in heavily feminised occupations like cleaning and gain income and self-worth from having children young. As these two groups move ever further apart, shared gender no longer automatically creates interests in common with other women. The XX Factor lifts the curtain on these social, cultural and economic schisms.

Chance of a Lifetime

The purpose of this Paperback is to start a debate about the real problem of how we should educate our young people. It is based on the book Chance of a Lifetime: How the other half loses by Jonathan Langdale and John Harrison. To be winners today, young people have to be good at school (or very lucky). Clearly, a great many of them aren t good at school, but we believe they are all good at something. Because the Great and the Good became the Great and the Good because they were good at school, the received wisdom is that their kind of academic schooling is good for everyone it must be! Look how successful they are! Thus the best schools must be facsimiles of their schools and schoolchildren...

Educating Tomorrow's Engineers

In the UK we teach young people to become computer users and consumers rather than programmers and software engineers. This is creating a chronic skills gap in ICT. We need around 82,000 engineers and technicians just to deal with retirements up to 2016 and 830,000 SET professionals by 2020. On the plus side, the Government's proposal to include computer science as a fourth science option to count towards the EBac is welcomed. The Committee also welcomes the EBac's focus on attainment of mathematics and science GCSEs but is concerned that subjects such as Design and Technology (D&T) might be marginalised. A Technical Baccalaureate (TechBac) is being designed but if it is to be a success, sch...

Understanding the Further Education Sector

Focusing on a less well-known area of education, the Further Education (FE) sector, this book provides education studies students a chance to provoke reflection, analysis, and understanding, as well as personal and professional development in the area. Jim Crawley brings over 40 years’ experience working in or with the FE sector, reflected in his committed and passionate approach alongside carefully balanced academic analysis and discussion. This book covers subsectors of FE including colleges, skills for life, work-based learning, and offender learning and cross-sector themes such as working and managing, social justice, equality, diversity, and sustainability. This book also supports independent study and complements other topics and themes across an education studies degree. This book is perfect for new and existing students of education studies, joint honours courses, teacher training, and those researching for a master’s degree or doctorate. It is the definitive text in the field and ideal for anyone wanting to further their understanding of the FE sector.
