Fun! a Boyhood

Fun! a Boyhood

I grew up in the '30s and '40s in an undeveloped suburb outside of Birmingham, Alabama. I was privileged to be born into a Coca-Cola family and had all the advantages, but my parents never coddled me and I was not over-protected. I was all boy--passionate about the woods, BB guns, firecrackers, bike riding and touch football, all of which played into the over-arching theme of my boyhood: having fun with my friends! I had a major talent for adventure and fun, and my parents gave me the freedom to develop this talent to the fullest. Fun! A Boyhood memorializes what was an extraordinarily joyful time in my life, along with some of the people and dogs who gave me so much love and friendship. Although this memoir is not great literature, I recommend it to anyone who wants to remember--or to younger people who want to know--whatit was like growing up in a simpler time. This is how it was...back then.

The Christmas Tree Express

Twin school bullies threaten to disrupt the peaceful, rural Vermont world of teen T.J. Flint at the beginning of Allen Johnson, Jr.'s new novel for intermediate readers, THE CHRISTMAS TREE EXPRESS. This tension sets the stage for a summer of adventure for T.J. & his best friend Sally. From their rescue of sled-dog Silver to a train ride with T.J.'s grandfather, a retired train engineer, to the rescue of the bullies themselves in a real cliff-hanger, to working alongside Dad on a real Christmas tree farm, T.J. & Sally's experiences define the depth of their rural life. Neither rich or privileged materially, T.J.'s prevailing thought on Christmas Eve is to count his blessings. At a glance, this book is a fun adventure story that offers a view of rural New England life. More importantly, at its depth, THE CHRISTMAS TREE EXPRESS is an invitation--to a place where family & community values not only still exist, but are shown to provide happiness, success & meaning to the lives of ALL of the characters.
