Handbook of Social Justice Interventions in Education

The Handbook of Social Justice Interventions in Education features interventions in social justice within education and leadership, from early years to higher education and in mainstream and alternative, formal and informal settings. A hallmark of the grant is the connectivity between various agencies to provide quality leadership preparation and development programs for aspiring and current school leaders. These collaborative efforts involve community and educational stakeholders including districts, universities, city agencies, not-for-profit entities, foundations, private academic organizations, and others involved in the development of school leaders. Education is a basic condition for economic and social development. Working in conjunction with the National Primary Education Commission, the World Bank supported consultations among teachers, parents, educational administrators, and community leaders to develop a strong foundation for primary education in Nigeria. The innovative work documented in this publication illustrates the potential not only for partnership between the users and providers of primary education but also between the World Bank and its clients.

Modern education, conceived in the late 18th century and expanded in the early 19th century to promote enlightenment and social equality, may finally be nearing its institutional limit. Over the past decade, following nearly a century of steady gains, there has been little further advancement in modern education. The modern system has proved effective in serving the interests of the established core of contemporary society, but ineffective in reaching for the periphery. The contributors to this volume offer various corrective approaches to correct this state of affairs.

Framing Questions, Constructing Answers

This workbook is an example of an interactive expert system. It simulates the relationship between an education policy maker and an informed consultant. The consultant interviews the policy maker, asking about the performance of the education system. The policy maker's answers to each question influence the next question that is asked. The consultant discusses results from studies in other countries to help focus questions. Eventually the questions lead to examples of programs tried out in countries with problems similar to those of the policy maker. All aspects of basic education systems are covered: finance, teachers, assessment, curriculum, material, buildings, and administration.
