"The dentate gyrus (DG) is one of the most sensitive regions to various brain insults due to the occurrence of neurogenesis in its subgranular zone. Thus, it may serve as a brain sensor to radiation exposure, chemical and biological toxins, alcohol abuse, smoking, drug treatments, hormone imbalances, stress, pain, hypoxia, brain trauma, malnutrition and aging. DG is also involved in the pathogenesis of multiple neurological and neuropsychological disorders including intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), Alzheimer's disease (AD), major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and schizophrenia. Over decades of research, our understanding regarding the function and...

"A book about the influence of estrogens on memory would have been unthinkable as recently as 30 years ago. Although a few small studies in the late 1970's reported a beneficial effect of estrogens on memory in human women (Hackman and Galbraith, 1976; Fedor-Freybergh, 1977), examination of the role of estrogens in memory did not truly capture more widespread attention until the pioneering work of Barbara Sherwin and colleagues in 1988 and beyond. In her initial paper, Sherwin showed that bilateral removal of the ovaries (aka surgical menopause) led to impaired short-term and long-term memory, whereas treatment of surgically menopausal women with estradiol alone, testosterone alone, or estra...

Recent advances in pharmacology and brain stimulation have led to the development of novel treatments for psychiatric disorders. These new advances have led to the development of a new subspeciality, Interventional Psychiatry. Interventional Psychiatry: Road to Novel Therapeutics reviews all specialized treatments including device-based interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). This book discusses the procedure-based pharmacologic interventions including ketamine infusion therapy and psychedelic therapies. Internationally contributed, each this book outlines the state of the field, as well as implications for training and the role of the interventional psychiatrist in treatment teams. - Introduces an innovative approach combining both well-established and innovative methodologies - Includes an in-depth description of putative mechanisms of action - Features clinician-friendly presentation of indications, contraindications, and techniques - Outlines guidelines to foster fellowships in Interventional Psychiatry
