The Anti-Imperialist and Nationalist Struggle of Halide Edib Adivar and Lady Augusta Gregory
This book offers a comparative study on the literary configurations of nation-state identity in the works of the contemporaneous Halide Edib Adıvar and Lady Augusta Gregory, specifically focusing on their roles as social reformists, female activists, and anti-imperialists through the components of national identity such as gender, language and transnational exchanges. It exposes the critical stance adopted by Lady Gregory and Halide Edib against British imperialism, and questions if these writers exhibit a local or international outlook of anti-imperialism. It is the first comparative study on Lady Gregory and Halide Edib, and explores how their anti-imperial stances shaped or influenced their sense of national identity. It will allow the reader to reach a unique evaluation of the literary works of these two writers with different cultural backgrounds but similar national ideals.
Neoliberalism and the Changing Face of Unionism
This book provides a political, economic, and sociological investigation of how neoliberalism shapes ‘working class capacities,’ or the power of the working class to organize and struggle for its collective interests. Efe Can Gürcan and Berk Mete discuss the global importance of the labor question as it pertains to Turkey. They apply the main theoretical framework of the combined and uneven development of class capacities to Turkish trade unionism. They also address Turkey’s recent history of neoliberalization and its repercussions for class capacities, as mediated by national regulations, conservative unionism, and Islamic social assistance networks. Finally, the authors explore how neoliberalism generates intra-class fragmentation through public regulatory mechanisms and cultural differentiation in the sphere of social unionism.
Journalism Pedagogy in Transitional Countries
This book explains what it means to teach journalism in countries with limited media freedom in the post-pandemic era. It digs into the social and historical factors underpinning the development of journalism university degrees and courses in a selection of illustrative case studies taken from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This work assesses both the limitations and creative opportunities arising from teaching journalism under constraints. Topics include but are not limited to: the application of Western theoretical frameworks in new transnational universities in China; the historical and political roots of the gap between industry and academia in Slovenia; ideological clashes and classism in higher education in the Arab region; scholar-activism in Turkey; decolonizing journalism curricula in South Asia; journalism students as research partners in the Philippines; and the repression of the student press in Mexico. Although this book focuses broadly on the Global South, the theoretical and practical implications of its findings and related discussion will inform the challenges facing journalism training today as a whole.
