Progress in Artificial Intelligence. Knowledge Extraction, Multi-agent Systems, Logic Programming, and Constraint Solving
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence, EPTA 2001, held in Porto, Portugal, in December 2001. The 21 revised long papers and 18 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 88 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on extraction of knowledge from databases, AI techniques for financial time series analysis, multi-agent systems, AI logics and logic programming, constraint satisfaction, and AI planning.

The tenth Portuguese Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence, EPIA 2001 was held in Porto and continued the tradition of previous conferences in the series. It returned to the city in which the ?rst conference took place, about 15 years ago. The conference was organized, as usual, under the auspices of the Portuguese Association for Arti?cial Intelligence (APPIA, http://www.appia.pt). EPIA maintained its international character and continued to provide a forum for p- senting and discussing researc h on di?erent aspects of Arti?cial Intelligence. To promote motivated discussions among participants, this conference streng- ened the role of the thematic workshops. These were not just satellite events, but rather formed an integral part of the conference, with joint sessions when justi?ed. This had the advantage that the work was presented to a motivated audience. This was the ?rst time that EPIA embarked on this experience and so provided us with additional challenges.
Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases
The three volume set LNAI 9284, 9285, and 9286 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the European Conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases, ECML PKDD 2015, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 2015. The 131 papers presented in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 483 submissions. These include 89 research papers, 11 industrial papers, 14 nectar papers, 17 demo papers. They were organized in topical sections named: classification, regression and supervised learning; clustering and unsupervised learning; data preprocessing; data streams and online learning; deep learning; distance and metric learning; large scale learning and big data; matrix and tensor analysis; pattern and sequence mining; preference learning and label ranking; probabilistic, statistical, and graphical approaches; rich data; and social and graphs. Part III is structured in industrial track, nectar track, and demo track.
Discovery Science
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the twelfth International Conference, on Discovery Science, DS 2009, held in Porto, Portugal, in October 2009. The 35 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 92 papers. The scope of the conference includes the development and analysis of methods for automatic scientific knowledge discovery, machine learning, intelligent data analysis, theory of learning, as well as their applications.
Knowledge Discovery in Databases: PKDD 2005
The European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and the European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) were jointly organized this year for the ?fth time in a row, after some years of mutual independence before. After Freiburg (2001), Helsinki (2002), Cavtat (2003) and Pisa (2004), Porto received the 16th edition of ECML and the 9th PKDD in October 3–7. Having the two conferences together seems to be working well: 585 di?erent paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Discovery Science
This volume contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2002) held at the Mövenpick Hotel, Lub ̈eck, G- many, November 24-26, 2002. The conference was supported by CorpoBase, DFKI GmbH, and JessenLenz. The conference was collocated with the 13th International Conference on - gorithmic Learning Theory (ALT 2002). Both conferences were held in parallel and shared?ve invited talks as well as all social events. The combination of ALT 2002 and DS 2002 allowed for a comprehensive treatment of recent de- lopments in computational learning theory and machine learning - some of the cornerstones of discovery science. In response to the call for papers 76 submissions were received. The program committee selected 17 submissions as regular papers and 29 submissions as poster presentations of which 27 have been submitted for publication. This selection was based on clarity, signi?cance, and originality, as well as on relevance to the rapidly evolving?eld of discovery science.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Discovery Science, DS 2018, held in Limassol, Cyprus, in October 2018, co-located with the International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems, ISMIS 2018. The 30 full papers presented together with 5 abstracts of invited talks in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 71 submissions. The scope of the conference includes the development and analysis of methods for discovering scientific knowledge, coming from machine learning, data mining, intelligent data analysis, big data analysis as well as their application in various scientific domains.
