Soviet Socialist Realism and Art in the Asia-Pacific
This study evaluates how the ideology of Socialist Realism, developed by the Soviets in policies and the practices of art, has been influential in the Asia-Pacific region from 1917 until today. Focusing primarily on Russia, then China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia, this book demonstrates how each society adopted and adapted the Soviet example to make some of the most important imagery of recent history. Included is an examination of how the practice of Western art history, the nature of art history in Asia and the forces of the Cold War have led to this influence being inadequately acknowledged across Asia and more widely. The book will be relevant to those interested in art history, Asian studies, political history and cultural history.

Beasiswa unggulan dari Kemendikbud RI dan fasilitas teknis dari Komite Buku Nasional (KBN) menjadi ihwal, sehingga residensi penulis dua bulan di Belanda (Juli dan Agustus 2017) adalah berkah bagi saya. Di Negeri Kincir Angin itu saya tak semata melakukan riset dan napak tilas jejak Raden Saleh—sebagai peranti untuk menyelesaikan sebuah novel berlatar sejarah yang saya tulis bersama Iksaka Banu—melainkan juga mengeruk secara rakus apa pun yang berpotensi menjadi sebuah pengalaman batin bernilai, berharga, bermanfaat. Satu di antara oleh-oleh yang kemudian lahir dan berwujud adalah kumpulan puisi ini. Saya mengunjungi sejumlah kota, selain Leiden sebagai tempat tinggal, karena Raden Saleh juga tinggal di Jerman, Prancis, dan singgah di Belgia, maka saya pun mampir dalam skala “kelebat” di Brussel, Brugge, Paris, dan Coburg (Dresden). Saya memasuki beberapa museum (hanya lima persen dari jumlah yang ada di Holland), selain mesti berpacu dengan waktu: meminjam buku-buku di Bibliotheek-universiteit Leiden.
