O fato é que todas sabem o que são esses estados emocionais, até precisarem definir. A partir daí, ninguém mais sabe. Por isso a importância de descrever os termos, um diferencial valorizado em várias abordagens para a ciência, sendo fundamental para a análise do comportamento. Qualquer que seja a área de estudo, é necessária uma descrição do fenômeno estudado. O termo ansiedade pode se referir a fenômenos bem distintos, tanto em relação aos estados internos do organismo humano quanto aos eventos do ambiente que produzem as condições corporais sentidas. É empregado para sinalizar uma relação do indivíduo com estimulação aversiva, caracterizado por apreensão, pela impossibilidade de prever ou controlar os eventos que estão por vir. Envolve espera. O medo, por outro lado, é uma resposta emocional imediata de uma situação perigosa atual ou de suposição de perigo, caracterizada por tendências de ações escapistas.
