Electronic Monitoring
This book offers a systematic, sociological and penological exploration of the most up-to-date uses of electronic tagging (also known as electronic monitoring). With increasingly overcrowded prisons, electronic tagging has been proposed as an alternative form of punishment, and interest in this topic is growing throughout Europe. Current debates and research have often been limited to policy evaluation and effectiveness, whereas Electronic Monitoring examines the brand of punishment from a social-science perspective. This book explores the uses and history of electronic tagging, and draws upon the work of the Dutch criminologist Willem Nagel to reflect upon this form of punishment by examining its functions and dysfunctions. It speaks to those interested in criminal justice reform, surveillance, penology and penal innovation and probation.
Crime Trends Through Two Decades of Social Changes in Spain
Abstract: "Over the last two decades, the Spanish social fabric has undergone a variety of profound changes, which in turn may explain the rise in police-recorded crime and prison population figures. Although the rise in crime reported to the police has been higher for common offences--misdemeanors--, the mainstream media concentrates overwhelmingly in serious violent crimes--felonies--. Spain does not have an official agency responsible for conducting victimization surveys to measure crime trends as directly experienced by the citizens. Based on this methodology, our study shows that contrary to information gathered from police data, and despite social fabric changes, crime in Spain is decreasing. The present study also reveals the distorted public perception of this trend, which seems to respond to a repetitive coverage of serious crime by the mainstream media." [author's abstract]

The global growth of private security services signals a significant shift in the production of the most traditional good provided by modern nation states - security. This systematic mixed methods analysis, linking output- and process-oriented policy theories, shows patterns and mechanisms of how political factors - like party dominance - drive the development of private security policy and industry. Based in comparative policy analysis it asks, what accounts for the differences in the policies toward and the outcomes of private security between EU member states?
Beyond Scandinavian Exceptionalism
This book explores how prison life is normalized in different countries, with a critical and detailed look at ‘Scandinavian exceptionalism’ — the idea that Scandinavian prisons have exceptionally humane conditions — and compares these prisons to ones in Belgium. It provides a more nuanced, systematic and contextualized comparison of normalization in two countries. Through analyzing policy and legislative documents, participant observation and interviews, it seeks to understand how normalization is implemented differently in prison legislation, policies and practices and compares the two societies for context. It also considers the material prison environment, security, the social environment and the use of time in prison. It provides insights into how normalization can be successfully and holistically implemented in both policy and practice, to contribute to a more ‘pure’ form of liberty deprivation as punishment without too many unintended effects.

Fenomenología criminal y criminología comparada
A la fenomenología criminal compete hacer factible que la Criminiología disponga del objeto material necesario para iniciar su contenido de esclarecer en lo posible, de forma rigurosa y persuasiva, el campo de la criminalidad. Esto explica la enorme relevancia que hay que atribuir a la Fenomenología Criminal como parte integrante de la Criminología científica. Esta función es imprescindible tanto para la Criminología en general como para cualquier Criminología específica. También, sin duda, para la llamada Criminología comparada, con intenso predicamento en la actualidad. Y con razón, porque cuando la misma se elabora con competencia y ciencia, permite ponderar, sinópticamente, la veracidad y posible aplicación global, o no, de las principales conclusiones de las investigaciones criminológicas.
