This book explores how the changing nature of work intersects with and influences young people’s views on their future. As an increasingly precarious service sector overtakes traditional industrial work, vocational education and training (VET) is held up as a panacea for poverty alleviation, youth unemployment and economic growth. However, the views of young people in VET themselves concerning their own work and aspirations have largely been ignored. Performing Modernism
This volume examines the reach of modernism in design and performance in interwar Romania. It follows the transnational trajectories of several remarkable Jewish avant-garde artists, actors, and directors based in Bucharest, the country’s capital, in the 1920s and 1930s. The first part of the book recovers the history of Bucharest’s first modern design institution and investigates its links with German design and the Bauhaus. The second half focuses on several innovative collaborations in the realm of Yiddish theatre, including the time spent in Romania by the world-renowned Vilna Troupe. Based on extensive original research, the book shows how Bucharest was connected to Berlin, Riga, and Chicago, highlighting the contribution of Jewish cultural production to avant-garde movements in Europe and beyond.
Romania, 1916–1941
This study challenges the rose-tinted view of the interwar period in Romanian history, which is often judged against the darkness of almost five decades of Communist rule. Romania, like several of the states of Eastern Europe, emerged from the First World War as it had entered it, as a predominantly agricultural country, and one of its major problems was the condition of the peasantry. This volume’s focus is the drive to improve that condition, on the collapse of democracy, and the search by Romania’s leaders for strategies to secure the state, to assert the country’s independence, and to maintain its territorial integrity in the face of the threat to the European order posed by two totalitarian systems, represented by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. By examining recent scholarship, this volume provides the most up-to-date account of Romania’s predicament in the interwar years. Resettlers and Survivors
Located on the border of present-day Romania and Ukraine, the historical region of Bukovina was the site of widespread displacement and violence as it passed from Romanian to Soviet hands and back again during World War II. This study focuses on two groups of “Bukovinians”—ethnic Germans and German-speaking Jews—as they navigated dramatically changed political and social circumstances in and after 1945. Through comparisons of the narratives and self-conceptions of these groups, Resettlers and Survivors gives a nuanced account of how they dealt with the difficult legacies of World War II, while exploring Bukovina’s significance for them as both a geographical location and a “place of memory.”
Repression, Resistance and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania 1944-1964
This book examines how the process of remembering Stalinist repression in Romania has shifted from individual, family, and group representations of lived and witnessed experiences characteristic of the 1990s to more recent and state-sponsored expressions of historical remembrance through their incorporation in official commemorations, propaganda sites, and restorative and compensatory measures. Based on fieldwork dealing with Stalinist repression and memorialization, together with archival research on the secret police (Securitate), it adopts an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the resurfacing of particular themes. As such it draws on concepts from sociology, political science, and legal studies, related to memory, justice, redress, identity, accountability, and reconciliation. A study of competing narratives concerning the meaning of the past as part of a struggle over the legitimacy of the post-communist state, Repression, Resistance, and Collaboration in Stalinist Romania 1944–1964 combines memory studies with a transitional justice approach that will appeal to scholars of sociology, heritage and memory studies, politics, and law.
Jüdische Jugend Im Übergang - Jewish Youth in Transit
Der Band "Jüdische Jugend im Übergang - Jewish Youth in Transit" ist das Ergebnis der gleichnamigen, international ausgerichteten Konferenz, die im März 2021 im Rahmen des DFG-Projektes "Nationaljüdische Jugendkultur und zionistische Erziehung in Deutschland und Palästina zwischen den Weltkriegen" stattfand. Die unterschiedlichen methodischen Zugänge der Beitragenden - allesamt Wissenschaftler/-innen, die schon in den vorangegangenen Jahren Arbeiten aus dem Bereich der historischen Jugend- und Jugendbewegungsforschung veröffentlicht haben - ermöglichen einen Überblick über Forschung und Forschungsperspektiven zum Thema jüdische Jugendbewegung des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Biographische Skizzen finden sich hier neben Formationsgeschichten von Gruppen und Jugendbünden, Fragen von Hachschara und Jugend-Alija, als zweier bedeutsamer Institutionen jüdisch-jugendbewegter Praxis, bestimmen den Fokus zahlreicher Beiträge.

Studii Iudaice și Israeliene: cercetare, construcție, moștenire constituie un omagiu adus domnului Liviu Rotman, distins profesor și eminent cercetător al comunității noastre academice, dar și deschizător de drumuri și întemeietor de domenii de studiu și cercetare la nivel instituțional. Contribuțiile din volum sunt semnate de specialiști – cercetători și cadre universitare, foști studenți și doctoranzi, actuali colegi. Ele se circumscriu celor două mari domenii întemeiate la București de domnia-sa: Studii Iudaice (înființate, la nivel masteral, în cadrul Universității din București, sub denumirea Studii Ebraice) și Studii Israeliene (înființate în cadrul Școlii Naționale de Studii Politice și Administrative și cristalizate ulterior prin întemeierea Centrului de Studii Israeliene Theodor Herzl).
