Enumerative Algebraic Geometry
1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Danish mathematician Hieronymus George Zeuthen. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.
Recent Progress in Intersection Theory
The articles in this volume are an outgrowth of an International Confer ence in Intersection Theory that took place in Bologna, Italy (December 1997). In a somewhat unorthodox format aimed at both the mathematical community as well as summer school students, talks were research-oriented as well as partly expository. Computers and Mathematics
Advances in computer technology have had a tremendous impact on mathematics in the last two decades. In June of 1989, an international conference was held at MIT, bringing together mathematicians and computer scientists, to survey the work that has been done in computational mathematics, to report recent results in this field, and to discuss research directions as well as educational issues. This book presents a fascinating collection of contributions on topics ranging from computational algebra, and parallel computing, to mathematics education. New Developments in Singularity Theory
Singularities arise naturally in a huge number of different areas of mathematics and science. As a consequence, singularity theory lies at the crossroads of paths that connect many of the most important areas of applications of mathematics with some of its most abstract regions. The main goal in most problems of singularity theory is to understand the dependence of some objects of analysis, geometry, physics, or other science (functions, varieties, mappings, vector or tensor fields, differential equations, models, etc.) on parameters. The articles collected here can be grouped under three headings. (A) Singularities of real maps; (B) Singular complex variables; and (C) Singularities of homomorphic maps.
Strategies for Sequential Search and Selection in Real Time
This volume contains the proceedings of the MS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Strategies for Sequential Search and Selection in Real Time, held in June 1990 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The conference focused on problems related to sequential observation of random variables and selection of actions in real time. This book will provide readers with a feeling for the breadth and depth of contemporary research in these areas.

Geometry of the Spectrum
Spectral geometry runs through much of contemporary mathematics, drawing on and stimulating developments in such diverse areas as Lie algebras, graph theory, group representation theory, and Riemannian geometry. The aim is to relate the spectrum of the Laplace operator or its graph-theoretic analogue, the adjacency matrix, to underlying geometric and topological data. This volume brings together papers presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Spectral Geometry, held in July 1993 at the University of Washington in Seattle. With contributions from some of the top experts in the field, this book presents an excellent overview of current developments in spectral geometry.
Real and Complex Singularities
The biennial meetings at São Carlos have helped create a worldwide community of experts and young researchers working on singularity theory, with a special focus on applications to topics in both pure and applied mathematics. This volume brings together surveys and recent work from the tenth São Carlos meeting.
Differential Topology, Foliations, and Group Actions
This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Topology held at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica in Rio de Janeiro in January 1992. Bringing together about one hundred mathematicians from Brazil and around the world, the workshop covered a variety of topics in differential and algebraic topology, including group actions, foliations, low-dimensional topology, and connections to differential geometry. The main concentration was on foliation theory, but there was a lively exchange on other current topics in topology. The volume contains an excellent list of open problems in foliation research, prepared with the participation of some of the top world experts in this area. Also presented here are two surveys on group actions---finite group actions and rigidity theory for Anosov actions---as well as an elementary survey of Thurston's geometric topology in dimensions 2 and 3 that would be accessible to advanced undergraduates and graduate students.
Hypergeometric Functions on Domains of Positivity, Jack Polynomials, and Applications
This book is the first set of proceedings to be devoted entirely to the theory of hypergeometric functions defined on domains of positivity. Most of the scientific areas in which these functions are applied include analytic number theory, combinatorics, harmonic analysis, random walks, representation theory, and mathematical physics - are represented here. This volume is based largely on lectures presented at a Special Session at the AMS meeting in Tampa, Florida in March 1991, which was devoted to hypergeometric functions of matrix argument and to fostering communication among representatives of the diverse scientific areas in which these functions are utilized. Accessible to graduate students and others seeking an introduction to the state of the art in this area, this book is a suitable text for advanced graduate seminar courses for it contains many open problems.
