Proteoforms

A proteoform is the basic unit in a proteome, defined as its amino acid sequence + post-translational modifications + spatial conformation + localization + cofactors + binding partners + a function, which is the final functional performer of a gene. Studies on proteoforms offer in-depth insights and can lead to the discovery of reliable biomarkers and therapeutic targets for effective prediction, diagnosis, prognostic assessment, and therapy of disease. This book focuses on the concept, study, and applications of proteoforms. Chapters cover such topics as methodologies for identifying and preparing proteoforms, proteoform pattern alteration in pituitary adenomas, and proteoforms in leukemia.

Global and Regional Mercury Cycles: Sources, Fluxes and Mass Balances

Essential themes in the biochemical cycling of mercury are the relative importance of anthropogenic versus natural sources, transformation and migration processes at the local, regional and global scale, global emission inventories of different mercury sources (both point and diffuse) of both natural and anthropogenic origin. In this regard, Siberia, with its vast territory and variety of natural zones, is of special interest in the global mercury cycle and in terms of the influence of geographical zones on source and sink terms in regional budgets. Siberia contains large areas of mercuriferous belts; natural deposits that emit mercury into the atmosphere and water. Siberian gold has been mined with the use of mercury since the early 1800s. But there, too, huge forest zones and vast areas of tundra and wetland (bogs) can act as efficient sinks for atmospheric mercury. Audience: Environmental scientists, legislators, politicians and the interested citizen wishing to gain a clear picture of the biogeochemical cycling of mercury.

Mother Africa, Father Marx

This book is the first work in the English language to discuss the participation of women writers in the narrative construction of Mozambican nationhood over the last half-century. Covering the rise of anti-colonial nationalism in the 1950s, the advent of the Marxist-Leninist Republic in the 1970s, the war that followed independence in the 1980s, and the transition to democracy and the neo-liberal economy in the 1990s, the volume focuses on four representative women writers who belong to distinct but overlapping periods and work in different genres. Dealing with Noemia de Sousa's poetry, Lina Magaia's testimonial writings, Lilia Momple's short fiction, and Paulina Chiziane's novels, the result is a close reading of the ways in which women have narrated and counter-narrated Mozambican nationhood to take account of the gendered power relations that traditionally underpin national community as imagined by men.

The pollination of cultivated plants: A compendium for practitioners

More than twenty years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations contributed to the growing recognition of the role of pollination in agricultural production, with the publication of “The Pollination of Cultivated Plants in the Tropics”. Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the first of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this first volume is on applied crop and system-specific pollination.
