The Thomas Family Values is a collection of short stories that follows siblings Andre and Tameka Thomas through a typical school year. Through the characters the readers are given insight into school and social issues facing our urban children today. School issues include bullying, teacher/ student dynamics (teacher praise and snubbing). Social issues include: affect of parent incarceration, having compassion for others and affect previous events has on todays kids. Stories in the book are adaptations of real life situations and give honest depictions of school life for inner city students. The book tries to balance between the images the media and others have placed on African Americans students. And the realities of the challenges social and school issues place on our kids.

The Great Andre was the foremost magician in the country. One day he ran into a little girl that claimed he was her father and wouldn't believe any differently. Feeling terribly alone, Andre took and interest in the child and ultimately her mother. Extracting the mother from a terrible situation and employing her as a housekeeper in the year of 1899. Becoming blind, Katy takes over the running of Andre's house and they become friends and in the end, a happy life is forecast for all of them. How many times have you looked at a person and made a snap judgement of who and what the were? It is my opinion you should not make any preconceivieved judgements based on ignorance. Give that person an opportunity to show you who and what the are and most of the time you'll find an extraordinary individual, one you'd have missed if you'd based your acquaintance on your first glance. I made that mistake once and when I'd discovered my error, believe me, I have nerver done such a thing again. And that goes for persons of different, races, creeds and religions. We are all one, under the skin!
