Artificial Markets Modeling

This volume features contributions to agent-based computational modeling from the social sciences and computer sciences. It presents applications of methodologies and tools, focusing on the uses, requirements, and constraints of agent-based models used by social scientists. Topics include agent-based macroeconomics, the emergence of norms and conventions, the dynamics of social and economic networks, and behavioral models in financial markets.

Artificial Economics

Simulation is used in economics to solve large econometric models, for large-scale micro simulations, and to obtain numerical solutions for policy design in top-down established models. But these applications fail to take advantage of the methods offered by artificial economics (AE) through artificial intelligence and distributed computing. AE is a bottom-up and generative approach of agent-based modelling developed to get a deeper insight into the complexity of economics. AE can be viewed as a very elegant and general class of modelling techniques that generalize numerical economics, mathematical programming and micro simulation approaches. The papers presented in this book address methodological questions and applications of AE to macroeconomics, industrial organization, information and learning, market dynamics, finance and financial markets.

Practical Financial Optimization

In Practical Financial Optimization: A Library of GAMS Models, the authors provide a diverse set of models for portfolio optimization, based on the General Algebraic Modelling System. ‘GAMS’ consists of a language which allows a high-level, algebraic representation of mathematical models and a set of solvers – numerical algorithms – to solve them. The system was developed in response to the need for powerful and flexible front-end tools to manage large, real-life models. The work begins with an overview of the structure of the GAMS language, and discusses issues relating to the management of data in GAMS models. The authors provide models for mean-variance portfolio optimization whic...

Stochastic Optimization Methods in Finance and Energy

This volume presents a collection of contributions dedicated to applied problems in the financial and energy sectors that have been formulated and solved in a stochastic optimization framework. The invited authors represent a group of scientists and practitioners, who cooperated in recent years to facilitate the growing penetration of stochastic programming techniques in real-world applications, inducing a significant advance over a large spectrum of complex decision problems. After the recent widespread liberalization of the energy sector in Europe and the unprecedented growth of energy prices in international commodity markets, we have witnessed a significant convergence of strategic decis...

COVID-19 and Communities

This volume presents an interdisciplinary reflection on the SARS-COV-2 pandemic and its consequences elaborated in real-time. It embodies the University of Palermo’s values and mission by bringing together academics of very diverse disciplinary fields on an issue that is disrupting all aspects of individual and community existence. This volume captures the voices of academics during the pandemic, allowing to crystallize the discourses that are emerging in a wide variety of scientific fields as events unfold and knowledge is rapidly evolving. They share the belief that to shed adequate light on the complex and multifaceted phenomenon of the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences necessarily...

Artificial Economics

Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE) is a new discipline of economics, largely grounded on concepts like evolution, auto-organisation and emergence: it intensively uses computer simulations as well as artificial intelligence, mostly based on multi-agents systems. The purpose of this book is to give an up-to date view of the scientific production in the fields of Agent-based Computational Economics (mainly in Market Finance and Game Theory). Based on communications given at AE'2005 (Lille, USTL, France), this book offers a wide panorama of recent advances in ACE (both theoretical and methodological) that will interest academics as well as practitioners.

This book contains the proceedings of the fib Symposium “High Tech Concrete: Where Technology and Engineering Meet”, that was held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, in June 2017. This annual symposium was organised by the Dutch Concrete Association and the Belgian Concrete Association. Topics addressed include: materials technology, modelling, testing and design, special loadings, safety, reliability and codes, existing concrete structures, durability and life time, sustainability, innovative building concepts, challenging projects and historic concrete, amongst others. The fib (International Federation for Structural Concrete) is a not-for-profit association committed to advancing the technical, economic, aesthetic and environmental performance of concrete structures worldwide.
