Despite the continuous progress in perinatal and neonatal care, sepsis is still a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates accounting for approximately 15% of deaths during the neonatal period globally. Additionally, despite being a life-threatening situation, sepsis in the neonatal population, and especially in very preterm neonates, is a potential source for short- and long-term morbidity and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Initial clinical signs and symptoms of sepsis are subtle and often non-specific in neonates, representing substantial impediments to the institutionalization of an international definition for sepsis in this population. Early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis is cru...
Approaches to complex pelvic surgery have changed dramatically in recent years thanks to the development of the entire field of orthopedic surgery. This volume focuses on the mastery of diagnosis, management and operative techniques for tumors of the pelvis. It also provides a thorough understanding of how to select the best procedure, how to avoid complications, and what outcomes to expect. Written by experts from leading institutions around the globe, it is a comprehensive reference on treating the full range of musculoskeletal tumors frequently encountered in the pelvis. It offers an overview and an update on the epidemiology, principles of initial assessment, clinical presentation and imaging characteristics of pelvic tumors, guiding clinicians through key questions for developing a differential diagnosis and selecting the appropriate surgical technique. This book is an indispensable resource for orthopedists, oncologists, as well as radiologists and pathology specialists treating patients with bone and soft-tissue tumors.
Bone and joint infections (BJI) cause serious morbidity and pose significant management challenges. They may cause acute sepsis with bone and joint destruction, discharging wounds, chronic pain, and permanent disability. With increasing age and expanding populations, bone and joint infections, especially those involving devices, will have a growing impact on healthcare resources. Specifically, one typical type of BJI, periprosthetic joint infection, is even more difficult to manage. Although the incidence of PJI is not high, the diagnosis is difficult; the treatment is complicated, and the efficacy is uncertain. Patients usually need to undergo multiple operations with long-term antibiotic treatment.
This superbly illustrated book is a comprehensive and detailed guide to the contemporary arthroscopic management of intraarticular fractures. Guidance is also provided on avoidance and management of complications and rehabilitation. The closing section addresses relevant miscellaneous issues, including arthroscopic management of temporomandibular joint fractures and extended indications for endoscopy-assisted fracture fixation. This volume will be of value for both trainee and experienced surgeons when treating patients with these complex fractures.

After the publication of the AO book Technique of Internal Fixation of Fractures (Miiller, Allgower and Willenegger, Springer-Verlag, 1965), the authors decided after considerable discussion amongst themselves and other members of the Swiss AO that the next edition would appear in three volumes. In 1969, the first volume was published (the English edition, Manual of Internal Fixation, appeared in 1970). This was a manual of surgical technique which discussed implants and instruments and in which the problems of internal fixation were presented schematically without radio logical illustrations. The second volume was to be a treatise on the biomechanical basis of internal fixation as elucidate...
This book uses a cross-disciplinary approach to examine the creation, development, ideology, and practice of the Marxist terrorist group 17N. Were the members of 17N individuals with high moral principles, as they claimed, who did their best to protect the civilians who happened to be within their field of operations? Or were they simply violent guerillas who prioritized successful assassinations of their targets at any cost? The textual analysis of this book addresses these questions and studies 17N from inception to the time when its members were arrested, providing a uniquely thorough examination of the organization manifestos and its correlation to the group's ideology and actual practices. 17N's Philosophy of Terror: An Analysis of the 17 November Revolutionary Organization first outlines the political and ideological framework of 17? and then describes their terrorist strategy and tactics. The authors consider these operations in the context of the manifestos that followed the terrorist acts, and conclude the work by addressing the events following the apprehension of 17N membersthe trial, the verdicts, the appeal trial, and the conclusion of appeal trial.
