Andreas Hofers disturbing and challenging imagery is derived from history, art history and popular culture, but is definitively his own, He often invokes an all-American optimism (e.g. comic book heroes) and a dark-era of European history (e.g. symbols of the Third Reich) simultaneously. Hofer works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing and collage.
Andreas Hofer has been developing a style of art which activates very different sources since the early 1990s. Some of these sources are generally acknowledged while others are dubious or even submerged. They range from American comic strips, German art and architecture dating back to the Nazi era and the painting of Kazimir Malevich to the popular fascination with the world of dinosaurs and science fiction as well as pre-modern forms of image worship.
