"You would not know where to begin to read the image. It looks simple enough. [...] There are so many routes into the image, so many points of recognition within the composition, and yet you do not know where to begin and, for that matter, where to close off or frame your reading. In Paul Winstanley's work the image is defined according to a frame of perception, where the image exists both to represent a scene witnessed, and to convey a position for the viewer within that. This much is given. Where the witness once was so now you stand in a reconstruction of the scene. This much you think you know."(Andrew Renton, "Deferred landscapes: A view from the threshold in the paintings of Paul Winst...

The Cambridge Companion to Beckett

The world fame of Samuel Beckett is due to a combination of high academic esteem and immense popularity. An innovator in prose fiction to rival Joyce, his plays have been the most influential in modern theatre history. As an author in both English and French and a writer for the page and the stage, Beckett has been the focus for specialist treatment in each of his many guises, but there have been few attempts to provide a conspectus view. This book, first published in 1994, provides thirteen introductory essays on every aspect of Beckett's work, some paying particular attention to his most famous plays (e.g. Waiting for Godot and Endgame) and his prose fictions (e.g. the 'trilogy' and Murphy). Other essays tackle his radio and television drama, his theatre directing and his poetry, followed by more general issues such as Beckett's bilingualism and his relationship to the philosophers. Reference material is provided at the front and back of the book.

Oil paint is both medium and motive in Martin's new work. Loaded onto boards in thick impasto and sculptural in its three-dimensionality, the painter's most traditional medium - autocratically absent from Martin's practice over the past three years - is transformed into performative volume, its material properties made dramatic in their own right.Executed in subdued palettes of white, grey and black, with a monochromatic approach further implied in the works' titles through reference to formal names of paint colour (including Burnt Sienna, Payne's Grey, Ivory Black and Titanium White), these works continue a long dialogue with minimalism and seek to heighten the viewer's sensitivity to subtl...

How can one become a successful artist? Where should one start a career in the art world? What are useful strategies to achieve recognition in the art system? Such questions hoard in students' minds ever since entering art school and they probably chase every kind of art professional who is at an early career stage. “The Road to Parnassus” tries to understand what makes a good start in today's art world, who are influential players in the field and which strategies might apply. The swift career ascension of Glasgow artist Douglas Gordon – one of today's leading visual artists – and of the broader YBA generation that rose into worldwide prominence in the 1990s – Damien Hirst and Sar...
