Segundo Xesús Alonso Montero, Ramón Piñeiro non só logrou continuar o proxecto tronzado en 1936 senón reinventar a cultura galega. O autor salienta o papel do intelectual galeguista como promotor da recuperación da cultura galega en plena ditadura franquista, nun momento en que as Letras en lingua galega, na Galicia franquista, eran irrelevantes, case inexistentes, e o uso social do vello idioma do país faría pensar que ese idioma só había producir, no futuro, unha literatura subalterna, "dialectal" e folclórica. Nese marco tan precario, cando non hostil, xorde o proxecto cultural que Alonso Montero describe pormenorizadamente en Ramón Piñeiro ou a reinvención da cultura galega. Desde o período anterior á Guerra Civil ata o seu papel como director literario de Editorial Galaxia, pasando polos anos de cárcere, a súa relación coa mocidade e a polémica con Luís Seoane, o libro é unha biografía intelectual de Piñeiro e un fresco do panorama cultural da época.
