Early Tejano Ranching

For two and a half centuries Tejanos have lived and ranched on the land of South Texas, establishing many homesteads and communities. This modest book tells the story of one such family, the Sáenzes, who established Ranchos San José and El Fresnillo. Obtaining land grants from the municipality of Mier in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, these settlers crossed the Wild Horse Desert, known as Desierto Muerto, into present-day Duval County in the 1850s and 1860s. Through the simple, direct telling of his family’s stories, Andrés Sáenz lets readers learn about their homes of piedra (stone) and sillares (large blocks of limestone or sandstone), as well as the jacales (thatched-roof log huts...

Final Rampage

It was night, raining nonstop. A man was running, desperate, eager to save his life. He was trying to escape from a certain death through the streets of New York City. Months later, Captain Maddock knew this wasn’t a typical case, but his methodical mind wasn't prepared for what was about to happen. Like clockwork, everything started tumbling down as we plunged into an unknown world where secretive intelligence programs had reached undisclosed levels of control over our reality, bending time and space into an ultra-menacing underworld where all you care for, all you fought for, and all you love is in jeopardy. Humankind has only one chance to solve this mystery—solve it or forever perish. Final Rampage is a new, dazzling, original sci-fi thriller about a dystopian cyberpunk mystery that will shock you and leave you wondering what it was all about. Dare to listen to it; nothing will ever be the same again.

L'intégration Du Droit International Et Communautaire Dans L'ordre Juridique National

  • Categories: Law

Just how International and European Community Law is being integrated into domestic legal systems is as yet not too well known. To gain a clear overview of this grey area requires more than knowing about the various constitutional rules. What is also needed is a study of little-known administrative practices and the attitudes of the national courts, where case-law is often as complex as it is diverse. When all these elements are taken into account, the general picture that emerges is a much more subtle one, transcending the classical positions based on the theories of monism and dualism. To grasp this reality and go beyond preconceived ideas, it seemed indispensable to make a thorough analys...

Capacity Building for Peacekeeping

In 2004, for the second time in a decade, the international community found it necessary to intervene in Haiti to enforce and keep a peace. For the first time under a United Nations mandate, several Latin American countries stepped up to lead the mission. Chile provided political leadership in the form of the special representative of the secretary general, while Brazil agreed to send the force commander as well as troops. Several other Latin American states also deployed military personnel. As a result of this historically unique circumstance, CHDS led a research project that looked at capacity building in the hemisphere for those countries that took part in the peacekeeping operation in Haiti: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the United States, and Uruguay. The project identified strategic-level lessons learned in capacity building for peacekeeping and tapped experts from all ten to contribute to Capacity Building for Peacekeeping. In addition, this study identifies which lessons are applicable to the critical task of peacekeeping operations in general.

Without money, terrorists cannot function as organizations and cannot conduct attacks. Yet the questions remain, how vulnerable are terrorists to financial disruptions? Can governments put pressure on their finances in meaningful ways or are they too resilient and adaptive to be affected by state actions? These and other questions about terrorism financing are vigorously debated by scholars and policymakers, particularly since the attacks of September 11th 2001 . While there is a growing literature on policy issues, strategies, and countermeasures, states must first understand their enemies before developing strategies to defeat them. So, instead of focusing on the state response, this book ...
