A Dream and a Chisel

A portrait of a young artist's formative years studying sculpture in Paris, recounted in her own words Angela Gregory is considered by many the doyenne of Louisiana sculpture and is a notable twentieth century American sculptor. In A Dream and a Chisel, Angela Gregory and Nancy Penrose explore Gregory's desire, even as a teenager, to learn the art of cutting stone and to become a sculptor. Through sheer grit and persistence, Gregory achieved her dream of studying with French artist Antoine Bourdelle, one of Auguste Rodin's most trusted assistants and described by critics of the era as France's greatest living sculptor. Confronting Modernity

  • Categories: Art

Confronting Modernity: Art and Society in Louisiana examines how the conflicts and benefits of modernity's nationalizing influences were reflected and resisted by the state's artists in the first half of the twentieth century. In Louisiana, such change not only produced the turbulent politics of the Huey Long era but also provoked debate over new ideas on art and social roles for artists. By using two of Louisiana's most prominent cultural figures of the era as lenses, Megraw reveals the state's complex relationship with modernity. Artist Ellsworth Woodward and writer Lyle Saxon battled to retain artistic control over what they considered the exceptional character of Louisiana. Woodward defe...

Puffy’s Legacy

Ethel Blanche Claiborne Dameron (“Puffy”) was born and raised in New Roads, Louisiana. Her husband Irving was in the levee construction business with his Father, so they moved along with their four children from state to state. Following in her Father’s pattern of “being involved”, Puffy began her civic endeavors in earnest once the family settled at Sandbar Plantation in Port Allen, Louisiana. The development of the West Baton Rouge Library and West Baton Rouge Historical Association/Museum along with the honoring of Henry Watkins Allen, the erection of State Historic markers, and the enrollment of live oaks in the Live Oak Society are just a few of the many events recounted in “Puffy’s Legacy.” As an 8th generation descendent of Col. William Claiborne, her legacy to the Parish and State of Louisiana lives on and continues to grow today.
