Horror, no matter the medium, has always retained some influence of philosophy. Horror literature, cinema, comic books and television expose audiences to an "alien" reality, playing with the logical mind and challenging "known" concepts such as normality, reality, family and animals. Both making strange what was previously familiar, philosophy and horror feed each other. This edited collection investigates the intersections of horror and philosophical thinking, spanning across media including literature, cinema and television. Topics covered include the cinema of David Lynch; Scream and Alien: Resurrection; the relationships between Jorge Luis Borges and H. P. Lovecraft; horror authors Blake Crouch and Paul Tremblay; Indian film; the television series Atlanta; and the horror comic book Dylan Dog. Philosophers discussed include Julia Kristeva, George Berkeley, Michel Foucault, and the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit. Using philosophies like posthumanism, Afro-Pessimism and others, it explores connections between nightmare allegories, postmodern fragmentation, the ahuman sublime and much more.

This collection presents cross-disciplinary explorations of the tropes, themes and representational frameworks constellating around the figure of the Goddess in South Asian cinema. It critically approaches the Goddess theme in various genres of South Asian cinema, using analytical tools culled from gender studies, comparative cultural studies, and religious studies, as well as film semiotics. The films discussed here represent variegated thematizations of the Goddess across regions in South Asia, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and various geo-cultural locations in India. As the volume highlights the regional and politico-cultural differences and commonalities in representational schemes between South Asian films of different genres through the Goddess motif, it will appeal to scholars of film studies, South Asian studies and comparative religion, and will hold a special appeal for those interested in Goddess cultures and theology.
This book looks at contemporary Gothic cinema within a transnational approach. With a focus on the aesthetic and philosophical roots which lie at the heart of the Gothic, the study invokes its literary as well as filmic forebears, by exploring how these styles informed strands of the modern filmic Gothic: the ghost narrative, folk horror, the vampire movie, cosmic horror and finally, the zombie film. In recent years, the concept of transnationalism has ‘trans’-cended its original boundaries, perhaps excessively in the minds of some. Originally defined in the wake of the rise of globalisation in the 1990s, as a way to study cinema beyond national boundaries, where the look and the story o...
