In 1890, the great Cuban revolutionary leader Jose Marti wrote his most famous poetry, Versos Sencillos, in a small town called Haines Falls in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Sincere and intensely personal in tone, these verses form a unique autobiographical expression yet have world-wide appeal. This dual-language edition of Versos Sencillos offers both the Spanish-language original and a graceful English translation of each poem in the collection. The translation follows the original rhyme scheme where feasible but deliberately chooses meaning over form, staying true to mood and method. In addition to notes on the poems, this edition also includes the particulars of translation and provides a background for the composition of the verses, features lacking in earlier translations. An index of first lines, both English and Spanish, is included. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

The First Lady of Mulberry Walk

Anne Acheson was a sensitive, caring and extremely talented sculptress, whose gift to the world at large has remained unacknowledged for almost a century. Sundae Best

This book is the first comprehensive, documented history of this popular institution, which millions of Americans fondly remember. For 150 years, the soda fountain was a community social center. In big cities, the neighborhood fountain had a clubby atmosphere because it drew its clientele from nearby businesses and apartment buildings. In small towns, soda fountains were very democratic because they attracted all ages and all classes of people. In both cities and small towns, soda fountains were part of the social infrastructure that held the neighborhood together. The evolution of the soda fountain reflected momentous developments in American history: urbanization, the temperance movement and Prohibition, the Great Depression, technological progress, the decline of Main Street and Center City, the Car Culture, and the growth of suburbia. The fountain's evolution was also closely tied to trends in retailing, food service, lifestyles, and the decorative arts.
