Summary of Jonathan W. Jordan & Emily Anne Jordan's The War Queens

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Massagetae, a rough, rural folk, were little known to the glittering courts of the Persian Empire. They were a target of conquest by King Cyrus the Great. #2 In 530 BC, the season of swords, Cyrus turned his attention to his northeastern frontier. He tried a soft approach with the barbarian queen Tomyris, but her response was to offer him a fair fight on her side of the river. #3 The Battle of the Araxes River was the final confrontation between the Persians and the Massagetae. It was a difficult victory for the Persians, and Cyrus took many prisoners, including Tomyris’s son. #4 The battle was a spit-and-blood struggle of unalloyed savagery. Tomyris won, and the Persian emperor died fighting her. But times change, and no enemy, ally, or situation is ever truly permanent. In two generations, a queen from modern Turkey would serve Cyrus’s grandson in one of history’s greatest battles.

His grandma whom he lives with is killed but he survives and is taken to hospital. He has no understanding about death so has no idea where his grandma has gone. Two people he knows well try to explain that she has died but the words they use confuse him. He is left with the strange idea his grandma is behind the sea and he must find her. But he doesn't know what the sea looks like and where it is. Where does he begin? After a number of failed attempts to find the sea Jimmy ends up in Dover. This is where he begins to learn about death by witnessing it for the first time. Finally he becomes involved in the rescue of the British Expeditionary Force from the beaches of Dunkirk and realises for the first time that his Grandma is dead. It is on the bloody shores of France that Jimmy, heroically, finally sees what is behind the sea.

Our Davies Story

Through the New Zealand Company, the first European settlers began arriving in New Zealand in the early 1840s among whom were several sets of great grandparents and great great grandparents of mine. The original idea was to write a short history of my father's family and one of my mother's but I became so fascinated by these pioneers and their stories that I wanted to learn more about them and their ancestors. I found Scottish farmers seemingly dispossessed by war; ancestors from Devon who emigrated to America in 1642; I found admirals and generals who sailed and fought all around the world and I found generations of Welsh carpenters, builders and farmers. Their descendants packed themselves and their families into tiny boats and sailed to the bottom of the world. They were fearless and determined to succeed in a brand new world. I am so proud of their achievements and so proud to be part of their story.
