Imaging of Adipose Tissue in Bone and Muscle: Implications for Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia and Frailty

The quantitative assessment of adipose tissue in bone and muscle is of increasing interest in musculoskeletal research and routine in relation to osteoporosis, sarcopenia, fractures, over-/under-nutrition states, as well as frailty. However, imaging approaches to assess myosteatosis and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) are still challenging, i.e., different fat depots (intermuscular, intramuscular, and intramyocellular fat) may represent different risk factors to metabolic health and muscle function but the segmentations of muscle and adipose tissue vary significantly, and MRI (the reference imaging tool for BMAT) faces challenges in the accuracy and precision of BMAT quantification. In addition, the studies of BMAT fatty acid composition in vivo are growing interests but limited by the estimation accuracy of advanced imaging methods like Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy or chemical shift encoding-based water-fat imaging (WFI) techniques. Furthermore, identifying the effects of adipose tissue on bone and muscle would give new insights into the pathophysiology of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and frailty and also improve our understanding of intervention.

Kinase Drug Discovery

Kinase drug discovery remains an area of significant interest across academia and in the pharmaceutical industry. There are now around 13 FDA approved small molecule drugs which target kinases and many more compounds in various stages of clinical development. Although there have been a number of reviews/publications on kinase research, this book fills a gap in the literature by considering the current and future opportunities and challenges in targeting this important family of enzymes. The book is forward-looking and identifies a number of hot topics and key areas for kinase drug discovery over the coming years. It includes contributions from highly respected authors with a combined experie...

How to Read a Novel

"Do we still know how to read a novel?" John Sutherland, Chairman of the 2005 Booker Prize Committee, asks. His disheartened answer is an unequivocal, "No." But Sutherland has not given up hope. With acerbic wit and intellect, he traces the history of what it used to mean to be well-read and tells readers what it still means today. Using this delightful book as a means to an end, he reminds readers how the delicate charms of fiction can be at once wonderful and inspired and infuriating. On one level this is a book about novels: how they work, what they're about, what makes them good or bad, and how to talk about them. At a deeper level, this is a book in which one of the most intimate tête-...
