Unravelling Migrants as Transnational Agents of Development
Since the early 2000s, there has been an increased interest in international migration as a central mechanism to advance what is called the development potential of international migrants. The contributions in this book argue that the current enthusiasm about the migration-development nexus should be approached from a perspective that recognizes and critically appraises the emergence of a new agent in development discourse, variably called "migrants," "diaspora," or "transnational community." The essays, which are the result of intensive student research at Bielefeld University, depart from issues raised by the migration-development nexus and ask how life-worlds and institutions are changing in the face of cross-border processes. Weaving the Camp
This book offers a socio-spatial analysis of a refugee camp in southwestern Uganda. Based on qualitative research with a multi-method approach the author shows how refugees are central actors in the operation and becoming of a camp. Not only do they crucially contribute to its social, micro-economic, and material realization but they also incrementally rearrange the camp space by acts of constant adaptation in order to make it work for its inhabitants. By means of social interaction, infrastructuring, translation, movement and material improvisation they navigate daily life in the semi-constricted and highly precarious space of the refugee protection regime and carve out its social and material landscape. Thus, this study challenges static understandings of camps and restricted conditions and puts forward theoretical implications for the rethinking and reassessment of agency in such contexts by calling for closer attention to ordinary practices.

„Nun das Wichtigste vom Tag“, so beginnen oft Nachrichtensendungen. Was so selbstverständlich klingt und klingen soll, ist Ergebnis eines Prozesses, der im fertigen Beitrag kaum noch zu erkennen ist. Dabei prägen Redaktionen unser Bild der Wirklichkeit, indem sie ihr Publikum mit Informationen konfrontieren, über die sich reden und streiten lässt. Wie und wann das gelingt, zeigt diese Studie anhand der ZDF-heute-Redaktion. Dort lassen sich Verfahren beobachten, durch die sich die Redaktion ihrem Verständnis der Nachricht nach und nach versichert. Die Ereignisse, organisatorischen Notwendigkeiten und antizipierten Publikumsreaktionen bilden dabei nur den Hintergrund, vor dem über Auswahl und Darstellung der Inhalte entschieden wird. Die einschlägigen Kriterien müssen immer wieder aus der Konfrontation mit Nachrichtenentwürfen entwickelt werden, um das Vertrauen in eine ‚akzeptable‘ Version zu begründen. So schaffen Redaktionen Normalität angesichts von Ereignissen, die uns sonst oftsprachlos machen. Zum Problem wird die routinierte Bearbeitung von Neuigkeit jedoch, wenn existenzielle Notlagen wie die Klimakrise durch ein Weiter-so gerade nicht zu bewältigen sind.
