The author of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus argues in favor of a “traditional” Greco-Roman gender ideology: that because men and women are biologically different, they ought to behave differently in the family and society. His gender-specific beliefs carry over into his teachings for the house churches, where only free married men are eligible to serve as leaders, teachers, and preachers, while women are expected to take up the subordinate female domestic roles of wife, mother, and household manager. This volume encourages a deeper engagement with the difficult issues—gender, race, and power—raised by these letters. By studying the Pastoral Letters with our minds sharpened and our hearts turned toward a generous freedom, we can struggle most productively with the influences of their teachings, past and present, and we can create a future church and a future world that are more just, truly inclusive, and indelibly marked by God’s grace.

This volume argues that Titus’s invocation of Crete affected the ways early readers developed their identities. Using archaeological data, classical writings, and early Christian documents, he describes multiple traditions that circulated on Crete and throughout the Roman Empire concerning Cretan Zeus, Cretan social structure, and Cretan Judaism. He then uses these traditions to interpret Titus and explain how the letter would intersect with and affect readers’ identities. Because readers had differing conceptions of Crete based on their location and access to and evaluation of Cretan traditions, readers would have developed their identities in multiple, conflictual, even contradictory ways.

Worldwide, most Christians are members of denominations that exclude women from ministry. However, coinciding with the rise of feminism, there has been a strong pushback against this traditional view. Conversely, in some quarters there has been a strengthening of resolve to maintain the status quo, believing that male leadership is God-ordained and valid for all times and places. Is the push for women in Christian leadership a case of the church now conforming to the spirit of the age, or has the church with its male leadership, for the last 1900 years, been guilty of that? Is the present move for inclusion a case of "yet more light and truth breaking forth from God's word"? This book is a defense of women's role in ministry. It looks initially at the condition women lived under when the New Testament was written and their expectation for ministry. Later chapters examine the discord in ancient Ephesus that led to restrictions in ministry for women and then look in detail at 1 Tim 2:8-15, the passage that is commonly quoted to restrict women's roles. My conclusion is that that it does not provide clear evidence of a permanent prohibition of women in leadership roles.

In the church tradition three letters, now known as the Pastoral Epistles, are attributed to the apostle Paul. They are unlike any other letters by Paul. They are written to two of his closest companions, Timothy and Titus, and they instruct those two leaders how to lead gathered Christians in Ephesus and in Crete. The letters contain plenty of instruction for how church leaders at that time, and in those places, were to function.
