Understanding the biological role of the diverse oligosaccharides of glycoproteins and glycolipids has been a major challenge in cell biology. Glycosylation is an essential step during molecular recognition and is involved in protein folding, sorting, targeting and intracellular translocation. Further, glycoproteins of the cell membrane play a major role in cell adhesion, hormone function, antibody action and signal mediation. Current knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in these processes is presented.
This volume and its companion volume 360 introduce a new topic to the Methods in Enzymology series. They will cover, among other topics, imaging, screening, and diagnosis in biological systems. See key features for greater detail. Key Features* Optical instrumentation for imaging, screening and diagnosis in molecules, tissues, and cells* Development and application of optical probes and techniques for imaging and drug screening, protemics, genomics, and cellomics* Applications of biophotonics research to the understanding of mechanisms of cellular reactions and processes, investigating the structure and dynamics of biomolecular systems, screening and drug discovery, and diagnosis and treatment of disease
Dictyostelium discoideum is a simple but fascinating eukaryotic microorg- ism, whose natural habitat is deciduous forest soil and decaying leaves, where the amoebae feed on bacteria and grow as independent single cells. Exhaustion of the bacterial food source triggers a developmental program, in which up to 100,000 cells aggregate by chemotaxis towards cAMP. Morphogenesis and cell different- tion then culminate in the production of spores enabling the organism to survive unfavorable conditions. Dictyostelium offers unique advantages for studying f- damental cellular processes with the aid of powerful molecular genetic, bioche- cal, and cell biological tools. These processes include signal tr...
As the amount of information in biology expands dramatically, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning. The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced.Protein structures better illustrate structure–function relationships, icons are simpler and more consistent...
The human body is constantly faced with microorganisms. Most of these bacteria, fungi, and viruses are harmless, many of them are beneficial, and a small fraction is pathogenic. For humans, infection with pathogenic microorganisms can be very serious or even fatal, ranging from mild transient or chronic infections to death. The first line of defence against pathogens is our innate immune system. Beside chemical and physical defence mechanisms of the innate immune system, phagocytic cells such as macrophages play a crucial role in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms. However, phagocytic cells and pathogens are in a constant evolutionary arms race, inventing new strategies to successfu...
