Excavations at Anshan (Tal-e Malyan)
This volume provides us with the first detailed view of the functioning of the Middle Elamite Empire outside Susiana. The excavation encompassed a segment of a larger building that must have served as a focus for the servants of the Elamite state in Anshan. Even though the function of the excavated area changed over time—from monumental building (level IV), to ceramic production area (level IIIB), to domestic structure (level IIIA)—the strong cultural ties to the lowlands continued until level IIIA was abandoned. Early Urban Life in the Land of Anshan
This book provides summary data on the archaeological excavations of Banesh Period (ca. 3400-2600 B.C.) levels in Operation ABC at Tal-e Malyan, site of the Elamite royal city of Anshan. These levels cover the critical centuries when complex urban life evolved in Mesopotamia and Iran. Sumner describes and illustrates a wide variety of finds—pottery vessels, stone and metal artifacts, shell and mineral ornaments, proto-Elamite clay tablets, cylinder seals and clay sealings, raw materials, and production by-products.
