Fiction. Based on historical events, ANSHU is a tale of passion and human triumph in the face of extraordinary adversity, spanning the cane fields of Hawai'i and the devastation in Hiroshima. A pregnant and unmarried Hilo teenager, Himiko Aoki, finds her Hawai'i Japanese American identity clashing with Japan's cultural norms when she is sent to live with relatives in Tokyo in 1941 and becomes trapped there with the outbreak of war. When America drops the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Himiko finds herself adapting in unexpected ways just to survive.
HALF A KILO MIXTURE
The fifteen stories in this collection are a blend of varied human experiences, characters, emotions, moods, and times. A bit like the diverse ingredients, textures and flavours that come together in ‘mixture’! Tragedy forges a link beyond time through an author’s works; a philosopher-thief expresses himself in a language unique to his city; the ancient, the inert, reach out to be heard; a celebration of a long-vanished river draws an unexpected presence. A surprising bond between the deceased and ‘the emissary’ forms ‘over’ death ceremonies; a long-ago act of anger offers a glimpse into a vanishing way of life. Two stories draw their essence from the Mahabharatha – one gives voice to lives crushed by choices they did not make, while another explores the thoughts of one of the epic’s more enigmatic characters. While the landscape largely reflects a South Indian, at times Chennai-centric, milieu, the stories, filled with empathy, humour, and explorations into what it is to be human, speak to everyone.
Bhai Vir Singh (1872–1957)
This volume brings together works by established and emerging scholars to consider the work and impact of Bhai Vir Singh. Bhai Vir Singh (1872-1957) was a major force in the shaping of modern Sikh and Punjabi culture, language, and politics in the undivided colonial Punjab, prior to the Partition of the province in 1947, and in the post-colonial state of India. The chapters in this book explore how he both reflected and shaped his time and context and address some of the ongoing legacy of his work in the lives of contemporary Sikhs. The contributors analyze the varied genres, literary, and historical that were adopted and adapted by Bhai Vir Singh to foreground and enhance Sikh religiosity and identity. These include his novels, didactic pamphlets, journalistic writing, prefatory and exegetical work on spiritual and secular historical documents, and his poems and lyrics, among others. This book will be of particular interest to those working in Sikh studies, South Asian studies, and post-colonial studies.
