Though strongly dissuaded by his wealthy merchant uncle, George takes a trip to the Holy Land to investigate his yearnings, triggering a series of romantic events. Unusual for an Anthony Trollope novel due to its many international locations, ‘The Bertrams’ is in all other ways a classic Trollope blend of romance, humour and religion. Anthony Trollope (1815 – 1882) was an English novelist of the Victorian era. Among his best-known works is a series of novels collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, which revolves around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. “The Bertrams” is an unusual novel of world travel, in addition to the typical subjects of matrimony and money, couples and relationships, by the author whose best-known work is normally set in England. This one has the flavor of a Middle Eastern travelogue with lively Victorian commentary and satire.

George Bertram's uncle, a wealthy City merchant, had sent him to Oxford where he made a brilliant record. Inclined toward the church and unwilling to follow his uncle's advice to adopt commerce as a career, he postponed his decision until after a visit to the Holy Land. In Jerusalem he met his father Sir Lionel Bertram, whom he had not seen since his boyhood and who had shown no interest in his upbringing. Sir Lionel held a minor military diplomatic post that kept him in the East, and while personally charming was little better than a worthless spendthrift.
