The first comprehensive account to record and analyze all deaths arising from the Irish revolution between 1916 and 1921 This account covers the turbulent period from the 1916 Rising to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921—a period which saw the achievement of independence for most of nationalist Ireland and the establishment of Northern Ireland as a self-governing province of the United Kingdom. Separatists fought for independence against government forces and, in North East Ulster, armed loyalists. Civilians suffered violence from all combatants, sometimes as collateral damage, often as targets. Eunan O’Halpin and Daithí Ó Corráin catalogue and analyze the deaths of all men, women, and children who died during the revolutionary years—505 in 1916; 2,344 between 1917 and 1921. This study provides a unique and comprehensive picture of everyone who died: in what manner, by whose hands, and why. Through their stories we obtain original insight into the Irish revolution itself.

This unique, compelling new title assembles the greatest players from one of the most celebrated teams in college football to share their personal memories. Filled with firsthand accounts with dozens of players--from the team's early days through the new millennium. "What It Means to Be a Hawkeye: Kirk Ferentz and Iowa's Greatest Players "explores the program's vast success and the seemingly simple question: What does it mean to be a Hawkeye? One person or one phrase cannot answer that question because so many different emotions encompass the true Hawkeye spirit. Over 50 of the greatest Iowa student-athletes, coaches, and administrators from the past century were called upon to express why they are so proud to be a part of the storied tradition that is Iowa football. "What It Means to Be a Hawkeye" brings together all of their stories. It's not just one tradition, one season or one particular game--it's the stories coming from the student-athletes and coaches who made the magic happen over the decades that capture the true essence of representing the University of Iowa.
Ireland’s Great Famine of 1845–52 was among the most devastating food crises in modern history. A country of some eight-and-a-half-million people lost one million to hunger and disease and another million to emigration. According to land activist Michael Davitt, the starving made little or no effort to assert "the animal’s right to existence," passively accepting their fate. But the poor did resist. In word and deed, they defied landlords, merchants and agents of the state: they rioted for food, opposed rent and rate collection, challenged the decisions of those controlling relief works, and scorned clergymen who attributed their suffering to the Almighty. The essays collected here examine the full range of resistance in the Great Famine, and illuminate how the crisis itself transformed popular politics. Contributors include distinguished scholars of modern Ireland and emerging historians and critics. This book is essential reading for students of modern Ireland, and the global history of collective action.
