New Research on Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumour of the esophagus, the muscular tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. Esophageal cancer occurs most often in men over 50 years old. There are two main types of esophageal cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. These two types are distinguished by the way they look under the microscope. Squamous cell cancer is associated with smoking and alcohol consumption. The incidence of this disease in the United States has remained relatively constant, while the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus has risen dramatically. Barrett's esophagus, a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a risk factor for the development of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Risk factors for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus include male gender, obesity, western diet, and smoking. This book presents new advances in this field of cancer research.

Interwar Architecture with Reinforced Concrete Structure Exposed to Multihazard in European Context

The theme of this book is between the response to environmental hazards - such as earthquakes of housing (of the so-called "other Modernism") - over issues of conservation of historical materials, as a kind of sustainable urban development which includes inhabitants' participation. It is important to preserve memory, and this book uses the knowledge of art, a multimedia installation, and the role of photography as an example of virtual witness. It includes a dialogue about traditional earthquake resistant natural materials with modern construction in order to learn lessons about retrofitting. (Series: Architecture / Architektur - Vol. 11)

Fascism, Architecture, and the Claiming of Modern Milan, 1922-1943

Fascism, Architecture, and the Claiming of Modern Milan, 1922–1943 chronicles the dramatic architectural and urban transformation of Milan during the nearly twenty years of fascist rule. The commercial and financial centre of Italy and the birthplace of fascism, Milan played a central role in constructing fascism’s national image and identity as it advanced from a revolutionary movement to an established state power. Using a wide range of archival sources, Lucy M. Maulsby analyses the public buildings, from the relatively modest party headquarters to the grandiose Palace of Justice and the Palazzo del Popolo d’Italia, through which Mussolini intended to enhance the city’s image and solidify fascism’s presence in Milan. Maulsby establishes the extent to which Milan’s economic structure, social composition, and cultural orientation affected Il Duce’s plans for the city, demonstrating the influences on urban development that were beyond the control of the fascist regime. By placing Milan’s urban change in its historic context, this book expands our understanding of the relationship between fascism and the modern city.

Citizenship in Transition

The revolutions and protests arising from the Arab Spring, combined with the establishment of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, challenged dominant ideas about what people in the Middle East expect from their governments. At the same time, a new wave of migration has been created, once again showing how the local, regional and global are connected in the identity of citizens and concepts of citizenship. This turmoil and its human cost —tragically captured in the image of drowned toddler Aylan Kurdi—have called into question prevailing modes of thinking about the Middle East, as well as the policy of EU governments towards refugees and immigration. These seismic events have compounded ...

Mussolini, Architect

During the fascist years in Italy, architecture and politics enjoyed a close alliance. Benito Mussolini used architecture to educate the masses, exploiting its symbolic prowess as a powerful tool for achieving political consensus. Mussolini, Architect examines Mussolini in Italy from 1922 to 1943 and expands the traditional interpretations of fascism, advancing the claim that Mussolini devised and implemented architecture as a tool capable of determining public behaviour and influencing opinion. Paolo Nicoloso challenges the assertion that Mussolini was of minimal influence on Italian architecture and argues that in fact the fascist leader played a strong role in encouraging civic architectu...

Marble is one of the great veins through the architectural tradition and fundamental building block of the Mediterranean world, from the Parthenon of mid-fifth century Athens, which was constructed of pentelic marble, to Justinian’s Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and the Renaissance and Baroque basilica of St. Peter’s in the Vatican. Scholarship has done much in recent years to reveal the ways and means of marble. The use of colored marbles in Roman imperial architecture has recently been the subject of a major exhibition and the medieval traditions of marble working have been studied in the context of family genealogies and social networks. In addition, architectural historians have rev...
