The Illusion of Ignorance
The Illusion of Ignorance examines the cultural politics of the American encounter with Porfirian Mexico as a precursor and model for the twentieth-century American encounter with the world. Detailed discussions of the logistics of conducting diplomacy, doing business, or traveling abroad in the era give readers a vivid picture of how Americans experienced this age of international expansion, while contrasting Mexican and American visions of the changing relationship. In the end, Mexico's efforts to promote Mexico as a partner in progress with the U.S. was lost to an American illusion schizophrenically divided between fantasies of American leadership toward, and refuge from, modernity. The Illusion of Ignorance argues that American ignorance of the experience of other nations is not so much a barrier to better understanding of the world, but a strategy Americans have chosen to maintain their vision of the U.S. relationship with the world.

Sexuality and the Unnatural in Colonial Latin America brings together a broad community of scholars to explore the history of illicit and alternative sexualities in Latin America’s colonial and early national periods. Together the essays examine how "the unnatural” came to inscribe certain sexual acts and desires as criminal and sinful, including acts officially deemed to be “against nature”—sodomy, bestiality, and masturbation—along with others that approximated the unnatural—hermaphroditism, incest, sex with the devil, solicitation in the confessional, erotic religious visions, and the desecration of holy images. In doing so, this anthology makes important and necessary contributions to the historiography of gender and sexuality. Amid the growing politicized interest in broader LGBTQ movements in Latin America, the essays also show how these legal codes endured to make their way into post-independence Latin America.

Family History of José María Escobar and His Descendants
José Maria Escobar (born ca. 1751) was adopted by José Miguel Antonio Ramírez, and was brought to live in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico when he was nine years old. Maria Antonia Gertrudis Chapa was the daughter of Maria Rita López de Jaen, who was the second wife of Escobar's adoptive father. In 1770, Escobar married Maria Antonia Gertrudis Chapa. He inherited a portion of land called Porción 76 from Ramírez, and later purchased the remainder of Porción 76 from his mother in law and step-mother, Maria Rita López de Jaen. The property was in Mier, which later became part of Starr County, Texas. Escobar ancestors came from Spain to Mexico, some being soldiers with Cortez at Vera Cruz in 1519. Members of the Escobar family lived in Texas and northern Mexico, along the Rio Grande River. They settled mainly at Escobares, Los Sáenz, La Rosita, Roma (Roma-Los Sáenz), and Rio Grande City. Others moved to California, New York, Ohio, Washington D.C., and elsewhere.
Health and Development
Health and development require one another: there can be no development without a critical mass of people who are sufficiently healthy to do whatever it takes for development to occur, and people cannot be healthy without societal developments that enable standards of health to be maintained or improved. However, the ways in which health and development interact are complex and contested. This volume unites eleven case studies from nine countries in three continents and two international organizations since the late-nineteenth century. Collectively, they show how different actors have struggled to reconcile the sometimes contradictory nature of health and development policies, and the subordination of these policies to a range of political objectives.
