We tend to think of rhetoric as a solely human art. After all, only humans can use language artfully to make a point, the very definition of rhetoric. With Rhetoric in Tooth and Claw, Debra Hawhee explores this unexpected aspect of early thinking about rhetoric, going on from there to examine the enduring presence of nonhuman animals in rhetorical theory and education. In doing so, she not only offers a counter-history of rhetoric but also brings rhetorical studies into dialogue with animal studies, one of the most vibrant areas of interest in humanities today. By removing humanity and human reason from the center of our study of argument, Hawhee frees up space to study and emphasize other crucial components of communication, like energy, bodies, and sensation. Recent discussions on Byzantine art have been dominated by the question of representing realia. The tree of life is an iconic visual symbol at the edge of religious thought over the last several millennia. As a show of its significance, the tree bookends the Christian canon; yet scholarship has paid it minimal attention in the modern era. In The Tree of Life a team of scholars explore the origin, development, meaning, reception, and theology of this consequential yet obscure symbol. The fourteen essays trek from the origins of the tree in the texts and material culture of the ancient Near East, to its notable roles in biblical literature, to its expansion by early church fathers and Gnostics, to its rebirth in medieval art and culture, and to its place in modern theological thought.
Judah Hadassi was the most prominent Karaite Jewish author of twelfth-century Byzantium, steeped in Karaite and Byzantine Greek traditions. In Theological Encounters at a Crossroads: An Edition and Translation of Judah Hadassi’s Eshkol ha-kofer, First Commandment, and Studies of the Book’s Judaeo-Arabic and Byzantine Contexts, a scientific edition of the first quarter of the Hebrew text of Hadassi’s magnum opus is presented with an English translation, a summary of his theology, a discussion of his use of the Greek language, and a linguistic analysis and transcription of all the Greek terms which appear in Hebrew letters in the entire treatise. This book should be of interest to students of Jewish thought, Hebrew literature and medieval Byzantine culture and language.
Germanos is a source of Mariological reflection for both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics. Yet paradoxically the two great Marian churches find it difficult to understands each others Mariology. Germanos homilies provide a common ground on which Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians can meet. Chapters include: Introduction, the life of Germanos, Byzantine rhetorical education, difficulties in understanding eighth-century Byzantine homilies and their use of rhetoric, Orthodox theology and philosophy, introduction to the homilies, a close translation and commentary on each homily from the Greek text. These commentaries include comments drawn from five separate commentators. Additionally there are fourteen commentaries on various themes in the homilies. Finally, a comparison is made employing an article by Tibor Horvath, S.J, and a dissertation by p.Erasmo Perniola with comments from this author in an attempt to establish an example of a mutually constructive conversation. This is done in the hope of establishing a renewed dialogue between these two great and deep Mariological traditions.

MILLENNIUM does not publish individual reviews, but does on occasions produce literature surveys. The languages of publication are principally English and German, but articles in French, Italian and Spanish can also be accommodated.
