Trapped in Equality
This book is the first comprehensive account of developments in legal equality in Finland from the late 19th through the early 21st century. The book demonstrates that equality is never a status or a state of affairs that either exists or does not exist. It is rather a continuous and controversial process of creating meanings that are bound to time and place. By exploring legal discourses, the book shows how in Finnish legal history, the formal and symmetrical understanding of equality has been dominant. However, this understanding has been informed by utilitarian arguments rather than the true protection of women as individuals. The assimilation of women into the male model of equality has been the powerful thread of equality policies and the law, but the gendered understandings of legal personality have imbued the formal and neutral law. The book will be of interest to legal historians, historians, and feminist scholars of law and social sciences.

Women and Family Property
This book examines property legislation and the actual position of women in receiving, holding and passing on family property as daughters, wives and as widows throughout history. Traditionally the prevailing view has been that women have been disadvantaged in the distribution of property and therefore less interesting as objects of study. This volume challenges this view and explores the securing of property for families or for individuals through transfers in the shape of dowries, marriage contracts, wills and other arrangements, as well as how women used and distributed the property they were holding.The scope of the volume is both urban and rural, analysing the position of women in relation to family property through contributions from a wide geographic area. Gender History in a Transnational Perspective
Recent debates have used the concept of “transnational history” to broaden research on historical subjects that transcend national boundaries and encourage a shift away from official inter-state interactions to institutions, groups, and actors that have been obscured. This work explores the quantitative and qualitative development of homicide in eastern Finland in the second half of the eighteenth century and the early years of the nineteenth.
