Port Cities in Asia and Europe
With the demise of European socialist economies and the marketization of Asian communist countries, a new global capitalism has reshaped the configuration of the world economy, with speed a determining factor to all transactions of information, finance, goods and services and people. Sea-ports that were significant for a slower but no less global economy have been undergoing transformation to stay economically and culturally relevant. Some manage to reinvent themselves as tourist cities, some face decline if they do not manage to transform. This volume looks at a number of port cities in Asia and Europe that face this pressure. With contributions considering history, contemporary developments, contacts between ports, the representation of ports and the relations between port cities and their hinterlands. This comparative study identifies many parallels between local histories and developments in the Asian and European port cities, as well as new opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from the developments and decisions in similar situations in other port cities.
Bahasa Reformasi
In "Bahasa Reformasi," Arndt Graf analyzes the political rhetoric of post-Suharto Indonesia from the first wave of major protests against the Suharto government in 1997 to the Wahid presidency in 1999-2001. In this period, New Order types of political communication were challenged by grassroots supporters of the "reformasi" movement with their own aspirations and modes of expressions. However, due to the structure of the newly liberalized political market, such grassroots aspirations were soon to be 'expressed', 'represented', and finally 'reformulated' by increasingly professional politicians. In their version of "bahasa reformasi" (political rhetoric resonating the "reformasi" aspirations), concepts of Political Marketing soon began to play a role. As the "reformasi" period went on from protests against the New Order regime in 1997-1998 to campaigning for the parliament and the presidential elections in 1999, an even more advanced level of professional political rhetoric could be observed, where keywords and humor were employed with great sophistication.
Aceh
The process of post-tsunami recovery and reconstruction in Aceh will take considerable time and is not easy. This book is an attempt at providing helpful background information on Acehnese history, politics and culture, which would benefit expatriate aid workers as well as foreign and domestic scholars in their dealings with the people of Aceh. It is written by specialists of Indonesian and Acehnese studies from a number of countries, together with Acehnese scholars. As the region was not accessible for decades, this book represents in many aspects a new, pioneering endeavour in Acehnese studies.
