In October 2004, the Art Technological Source Research study group held a symposium at the Instituut Collectie Nederland, Amsterdam: Approaching the Art of the Past: Sources & Reconstructions. It was held to discuss the role of source research and the use of reconstructions in the field of art technological research.
This book undertakes a critical survey of art history across Europe, examining the recent conceptual and methodological concerns informing the discipline as well as the political, social and ideological factors that have shaped its development in specific national contexts.
The main emphasis of the symposium from which these contributions were taken is textual sources - medieval treatises, painting manuals, 'books of secrets', documents, industrial archives, patents and specialized journals.
